Cerberus is the ferocious three headed hell hound that guards the gates of Hades, the ancient greek underworld. Cerberus is the child of Echidna the mother of monster and Typhon a giant even the Olympians feared. Cerberus only has an appetite only for live meat and thus allow only the spirits of the dead to freely enter the Underworld, but allow none to leave. Cerberus is Hades lord of the Underwold loyal watchdog, and guarded the gates that granted access and exit to the Underwold.

Only a few mortals leave or enter Underworld without the permission of Hades, among them who have made it by Cerberus are:

  • Orpheus the son of the muse Caliope who, after returning from his adventures with the Argonauts, discovered that his beloved Eurydice had died, and went to Hades to rescue her. He was met by Cerberus, but, with his music, Orpheus mesmerized the beast, and gained access to the Underworld.
  • Theseus and Peirithous managed to distract to Cerberus sufficiently, to enter Underworld, to try to abduct Persephone.
  • Hercules was able to, in the last of his twele Labors, capture Cerberus, and take him to the court of the Mycenaens.

  • The general public is unaware of Cerberus except as a mythological character.
