Challengers of the Unknown #81 is an issue of the series Challengers of the Unknown (Volume 1) with a cover date of July, 1977.
Synopsis for "Multi-Man's Master Plan"
Following the kidnapping of June Prof goes after her, meanwhile the rest of the Challengers fly to Los Angeles to save the city from Multi-Man's threat. Entering Multi-Man's hidden lair, Prof gets knocked unconscious and finds himself together with June. In LA the Challengers find the villain, and Red goes toe to toe with him, hitting him with a high-energy weapon, but suddenly Multi-Man vanishes.
While all of this is happening, back in Challengers HQ, Gaylord Claybourne is back after so many years, and wishes to join the team, but he finds a health report on Prof that shocks him. Indeed, Prof isn't doing so well when we cut back to him, he is completely exhausted, but with a last ditch effort he and June short circuit the generator inside Multi-Man's secret base.
(This happens before the shutdown) The baffled Challengers get the news that MM's new target is Denver, and he wants to blow up the newly built nuclear reactor. On the way there they speculate how he could have teleported away, and the conclusion is that he would've needed insane amounts of electric power. In Denver, Rocky rushes Multi-Man, but he seems invincible in his giant form, but when all hope is lost, the giant villain suddenly loses all his power and reverts to his human form. Of course we already know why this happened: his power source was cut off.
The Challengers learn about Prof's condition from June, they have no idea what to do as he is already unconscious, but Claybourne shows them what their super-computer printed out: visit Doctor Heathcliff Monroe in Perdition…
