Charity Bleak is a witch-woman residing in Limbo Town, and the mother of Klarion and Beulah Bleak. She is a strict, faithful adherent to Croatoan beliefs and is often assisted by her daughter Beulah in her witch-woman tasks.
History
After her first husband Mordechai vanished without notice and never returned, Charity married Ezekiel. She is sometimes annoyed by her young son Klarion's curious and rebellious nature, wishing that he would settle down and become a farmer has his father had.[1]
When Klarion returned from his journey above ground to New York City and learned of a plot by Melmoth to invade Limbo Town and enslave its residents, Charity and her fellow citizens believed him to be in a lying blasphemer and had him tied up to be burned at the stake. Once Klarion was proven correct, she apologized and asked him become the community's new leader, though he opted to head back to the surface instead.[2]
