Charles Lane II is the grandson of golden age crimefighter Chuck (Jester) Lane, and he succeeded Chuck as the second Jester.

History

Chuck Lane fought crime and the Nazis in World War II as the Jester, and was also secretly an agent of the secret society known as the Arcadians (who claimed to have manipulated America's history since its beginning), as was his son, Charles's father. But when Charles's father was murdered by the Arcadians after rebelling against them, Charles was left with a desire for revenge which led him eventually to adopt the identity of the new Jester and conspire with his grandfather to destroy the society.

Charles and Chuck were able to destroy the Arcadians, although Chuck died in the effort. Charles subsequently tried to steal for himself the power that had made Uncle Sam the symbol of America (planning on using that power to rule the United States), single handedly defeating Sam's Freedom Fighters and murdering Firebrand before being beaten by Uncle Sam and taken into custody. He was later reported to have been given the death penalty.
