Charon is the ferryman of Hades in Greek mythology. He transports souls of the dead across the River Styx, from the land of the living to the land of the dead. Every passenger is charged with golden coins or they are stranded on the riverbanks for eternity. His position has put him into contact with many super-heroes and other mythological figures. Charon was first adapted to DC Comics by Gardner Fox and Howard Sherman in More Fun Comics #56. (1940)
