Checkmate #16 is an issue of the series Checkmate (Volume 1) with a cover date of May, 1989.
Synopsis for "The Janus Directive, Part 3: Shadow Knights"
At Koning Industries, Shelby, Virginia, Harry Stein and Harvey Bullock decide to not kill Dr. Megala because they do not have any information that confirms the Janus Directive exists. Checkmate decides to make a team of Val Vostock, Black Thorn and Gary Washington (knight of checkmate) to kidnap Amanda Waller. Dr. Megala uses a tracking device built in his wheelchair to wait for rescue.
The three are able to infiltrate Bel Rev and battle Captain Boomerang and Bronze Tiger. On a surveillance camera Amanda Waller notices a Checkmate knight and she decides to escape which she does so successfully. She knows she has no control over Checkmate anymore.
Back at Koning Industries, this failure is reported to Harvey Stein and Harvey Bullock. As they are talking, Major Force of Project Atom arrives and attacks the building. The Peacemaker decides to attack Major Force.
