Christopher "Topher" Abar (born Doyle) is the oldest adopted child and only son of Angela and Cal Abar. Being the oldest, he is also the one Angela connects with the most.
History
Early Life and the White Night
Emma, Rosie, and Topher grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Their father Doyle was an officer with the police department, having been the partner of Angela Abar.
On Christmas Eve, 2016, Topher's parents were victims of what would be known as the "White Night", when members of the white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry organized to assassinate all the members of Tulsa's police force. Though all the children would have been killed, Topher protected his sisters in a closet while their parents were murdered and survived the night.
Angela, having survived the night due to an impulsive reaction from her husband against their attackers, offered to adopt the children. The three were taken in, Angela's close friend, police chief Judd Crawford became their godfather, and their last names were changed to Abar.[1][2]
A New Way of Life
By 2019, Topher had grown very close to Angela, with their relationship being less that of a mother and son, and more of an older sister and younger brother. Topher also grew very aggressive, attacking anyone who implied racism against Angela. He continued to be very protective of his sisters, and formed a very close father-son bond with his new godfather, Judd Crawford, whom he affectionately called "Uncle Judd," unaware he was secretly a member of the orginization that killed his parents. Topher also grew into the habit of sleeping with a plush toy of Bubastis, the pet of the famous retired and thought dead crimefighter Ozymandias.[1][2]
Death of the New World
When Judd was killed by Will Reeves, Angela told Topher herself Topher of Judd's death, he seemed in denial, angry and sad, and wanted to be left alone. He attended Judd's funeral and afterwards told Angela she should never have put her life on the line by being a cop. When Angela went into a coma a few days later, Topher and his sisters were terrified, but Topher took charge and went on the front with his father in comforting them.[2][3][4][5]
When Angela came out of her coma and returned home, Topher, Emma, and Rosie were all asleep. It didn't matter, anyhow, because Angela broke Doctor Manhattan out of his memory-loss trance as "Cal Abar" thanks to the Seventh Kavalry and Lady Trieu's plans to kill him. Manhattan then teleported the children to the Dreamland Theater in the center of town, where Angela's grandfather, Will Reeves, was waiting. He told them Angela was on the way and that he was family, and the children were so tired from the teleportation they didn't argue and simply returned to sleep. When Angela did arrive, she woke all of them up and had them come with her to her bakery, where she worked. Inside, Topher made a shocking and horrifying discovery: a costume with a police badge and a mask. Angela hadn't stopped being a police officer, now she just hid it from everyone, even her own son. Feeling betrayed, Topher turned to his adopted mother and closest friend, who said nothing as she ushered him and his sisters into a car parked behind the "bakery" for emergencies, and they headed home.[6][7]
