Chris King and Vicki Grant used Hero Dials to fight the Master's machinations.

The King family moved about a lot. They came to Fairfax when Greg got a job with the local police department. Chris had a rough childhood; they rarely stayed anywhere long enough for him to make good friends. But on his fist day at school, he made some: Roger Dunbar and Vicki Grant. He was instantly smitten by the straight A cheerleader. She helped him catch up for his mid-terms, and explored the supposedly haunted Winslow Manor after.

In the house, they discovered two H-Dials. These dials, disguised as a watch and a necklace, could make the wearer a superhero for an hour. The new Hero Dials were created by the previous owner, Robby Reed. He had used his own dial to split in two, but in doing so, created two dials, as well as two personalities: all his good became the Wizard, and the evil that remained was the Master. He had no memories of ever being Robby Reed. With the new dials, Chris and Vicki eventually managed to merge the two.

Chris eventually parted company with Vicki only to discover that his body had internalized the power of his H-Dial, condemning him to become a new hero every hour whether he needed to or not. S.T.A.R Labs gave him a suit designed to help him monitor his changes and set about trying to cure his condition.

Chris assumed the identities of dozens of superheroes through the use of the Hero Dial:

However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and should be considered apocryphal.
