Christopher Smith is a psychotic member of the Peacemakers and cyborg with a vicious grudge against Superman.

Smith was part of the Peacemaker security detail at the Lajes Creek mining camp in Brazil and was humiliated and filled with rage when Superman defeated them. Superman escaped with Lazarus agent Lois Lane, leaving her in a village several miles away before disappearing. When the Peacemakers went to the village to collect her, Smith believed the villagers were laughing at him and opened fire on them.[1] Nobody was harmed, but only because Smith's hands were shaking so much that he could not shoot straight.

Smith was taken to headquarters where he received "therapy" consisting of speaking to the artificial intelligence Brainiac system. Despite Smith, who was wracked with guilt, admitting that he had wanted to kill the innocent bystanders and it was pure luck that he hadn't; Brainiac asserted that his gun was simply faulty and cleared him for a return to duty, even as Smith tearfully begged for help and not to be sent back into the field. He was assigned as part of Lois Lane's protective detail in Orangi Town, Pakistan, where she had traced Superman to. Lois insisted on going out alone and unprotected, but the Peacemakers soon received an automated distress call and mobilised to save her. When they reached her location they found Superman there and squared off against him. Smith angrily yelled "Remember me, pal?!" at Superman, to which he simply replied "No" and froze them all in place with a blast of freezing air. Superman leapt away and Lois berated the frozen Peacemakers as a crowd of civilians gathered to laugh at them.

Smith blacked out and when he came to he was outside the ice and being restrained by the others. When he asked what had happened they pointed at a pile of corpses who he had apparently killed.[2] Enraged by Smith's massacre, Superman attacked the Peacemaker base in Pakistan, but Lazarus had already pulled Smith out and sent him to Lazarus' R&D facility in Nevada. Brainiac attempted to bargain with Superman using Smith's whereabouts, but Superman refused to listen, afraid of what he would do to Smith if he ever got his hands on him.[3]

Brainiac converted Smith into a cyborg abomination at Lazarus Corp's director Ra's al Ghul's command. The operation was nightmarish torture carried out without anaesthesia, with Smith begging for death the whole time.[4] However, this was intended as a reward rather than a punishment, as Ra's al Ghul had been impressed by Smith's actions. he was promoted to captain and given command of a force of Peacemakers sent to capture Superman in Smallville, Kansas. By this point Smith was completely insane, but his men were in awe of the lengths he appeared to have gone to in the name of "peace" and considered him an inspiration.

Smith and his men flew to Smallville in a fleet of helicopters and spotted Superman standing outside a movie theatre. Smith shot Superman in the chest with a gun Brainiac had given him that fired bullets made of the radioactive remnants of Superman's homeworld. The bullets were able to penetrate Superman's armour and invulnerable skin, dropping him, but by the time they had rappelled down and reached the theatre Superman was gone. A blood trail ran up main street and Smith ordered his men to secure a perimeter while he searched for Superman alone, wanting to defeat him personally. He tracked the bullet to a drugstore and smashed through the wall, where he found the wounded Superman sheltering with Lois Lane and a member of the Omega Men. Smith attacked Superman, his new cyborg strength allowing him to overpower Superman, who was weakened by the bullet.

Lois and the Omega Man ran out to defend Superman, standing between him and Smith. Lois ordered the Peacemakers to arrest Smith for his murders in Pakistan but they refused and told her that she would be the one who ended up in a cell if she tried to stop them. A group of Smallville citizens armed with rifles also came out and ordered them all to get out of the town. One of the Peacemakers suggested to Smith that they simply take superman and go but smith refused as he wanted to kill Superman then and there. Superman activated his armour's battle configuration and summoned up a cyclone of red dust that scattered everyone except for him and Smith. He hit Smith a thousand times in thirty seconds, bringing the mad behemoth to his knees, but Smith just mocked Superman for being afraid of his own rage and power and shot Superman repeatedly with the irradiated bullets. The armour's systems failed and Superman collapsed. Although he still tried to resist, he was helpless and Smith moved in for the kill. However before Smith could finish Superman off, Brainiac remotely shut him down as Ra's al Ghul wanted him taken alive.[5]
