Circe is a sorceress and the adoptive mother of Wonder Woman.
History
The former ruler of the island of Aeaea and the most beloved by the goddess Hecate among her disciples,[1] Circe was banished to the "Wild Isle of Hell" for her crimes against the Gods. One day Apollo brought her the infant Diana. He told her that Diana had been taken from the Amazons as punishment for their own transgressions and was now the last Amazon, as the others had been imprisoned for eternity, and even the very word "Amazon" was outlawed so tat no mortal or God could speak it. Apollo said that Circe was now Diana's warden, but did not give her any instructions to protect Diana or keep her alive. Circe initially planned to just leave Diana to die, but was impressed when the baby easily fought off a serpent that came to kill her.
Circe took Diana into her shelter and accepted the responsibility of raising her. She quickly came to love Diana as her own daughter, and having someone to care for gave her life meaning again when she had previously given up. Circe outfitted the bare cave she had been living in with all the comforts of home to give Diana the best life she could.[2] When Diana was a little girl, Circe had an intense vision of her as an adult, leaving her fight to save the world. Hecate appeared before her and told her that the goddesses had formed a subtle and intricate plan to use Diana to bend the arc of the universe towards justice; each of them had needed to sacrifice what was most precious to her, which for Hecate was Circe.[1]
As Diana grew older, Circe taught her magic. When she was a teenager, Diana began to feel like there was a word she had never said, but was important and powerful. Years later when she had grown up she was finally able to say it: Amazon. Circe told her who she was, and how the Amazons had been the protectors of the world above. She outfitted Diana with the most powerful weapons she could create and sent her into the world above to defend humanity from Gods and monster alike.[2]
