Quote1 Lives were never in jeopardy. Ether was simply a disillusioned jerk, believing fate had dealt him a lousy hand... and that he had every right to even the score! Quote2
Max Mercury src

Mister Ether was a villain fought by Max Mercury and the second Flash.

During an experiment against cancer Shearson began to evaporate into a purple ether. He was fired and decided to turn to crime, calling himself Mister Ether. Shearson and Max Mercury first met after Shearson robbed a bank and while Shearson was not caught due to turning into a cloud of gas and escaping down a drain, he could not escape with his tangible stolen money.[1]

Max Mercury and Shearson had several more fights, normally bank robberies and jewellery stores. As time went on, it was becoming more clear that he was breaking down both physically and mentally. During a fight with Max Mercury and the Flash (Barry Allen), Barry led Shearson outside where he dissipated into the air, spreading himself too thin to collect his dispersed molecules.

Shearson appeared again to kill his old lab colleague, Dr. Cantele. He dropped the gun pointing at Dr. Cantele's head and fell to the floor, claiming that he could not shoot him. Afterwards he was transferred to a prison where Dr. Cantele said he would find Shearson a cure, but this never happened.

Three years later, Shearson appeared again after inhaling Joker Venom. He attacked Max Mercury by filling his lungs with his ether and Joker Venom, poisoning him. Max Mercury managed to hold his breath long enough to exhale Shearson into a prison cell and then vibrated out, trapping Shearson in the prison cell again.
