Synopsis for "The People of the Maelstrom"

Claw and Ghilkyn are rescued from a burning boat by Trefalion and his people the Heshahnoy. They are then transported to a wonderous city beneath a lake. Trefalion relates the history of how his people came to dwell underneath the water. The Heshahnoy were a benevolent people and they attempted to share their advanced knowledge with the outside world but they were treated in a barbaric manner by local inhabitants. They retreated underneath the lake to escape violence and retaliation from above. They now live in peace, free of the madness that rules the outside world. Trefalion explains how they constructed a crystal that provides energy from the sun to power their world. He also points out that the water from above is held at bay by another crystal that turns out to be the third and final facet of the Grimstone. Claw pleads with Trefalion that he must have the crystal to defeat the Demon Nhglthss but Trefalion insists that turning over the stone is out of the question. His people need the crystal to survive. In the meantime King Occulus and Miftung conjure up a slime creature from the depths of the lake. The creature attacks the city but Claw and Ghilkyn are able to defeat it after a hard struggle. Claw pleads with Trefalion once more now that he has witnessed the evil they are facing. In a surprising move, Trefalion agrees to hand over the Grimstone facet to Claw. This act means instant death to his people but he realizes that the Heshahnoy have no place in such a violent world. With the stone gone, the waters engulf the wonderous city and the Heshahnoy are no more. In the meantime King Occulus is outraged at the latest failure to kill Claw. He berates Miftung and tells him that he only has one last chance to eliminate the barbarian. The final panels show Claw and Ghilkyn putting the three pieces of the Grimstone together and disappearing into another dimension.
