Cody Kline is a Gotham artist who was brainwashed by Spellbinder into becoming the social revolutionary Tutor.

History

Cody Kline was born and raised in Gotham, and studied art at Gotham University. After graduating he became a street artist, racking up a small number of citations for trespassing and vandalism, but otherwise leading a mundane life.

Kline was a victim of one of Scarecrow's gas attacks and suffered a psychotic break after being exposed to the fear toxin. He was taken to Arkham Asylum for a 72-hour psychiatric hold where he was assessed by Charles Dante. Dante cleared him for release after the hold expired, although he was still suffering from paranoid delusions, and offered to provide ongoing counselling. Dante used the sessions as an opportunity to hypnotise Cody into becoming Tutor.

Dante tasked Tutor with painting hypnotic murals around The Hill. The murals brainwashed criminals and police alike in The Hill to steal on his behalf. Tutor used the brainwashed civilians to attack the Batgirls and was even able to take over Stephanie Brown's mind.

Barbara Gordon considered him the major threat to The Hill, and the Batgirls were eventually able to capture him. As Barbara was an old college classmate of Dante's she had the Batgirls deliver Tutor to his house for treatment, unaware that he was the mastermind. Dante's ultimate plan was to spark a revolution in Gotham with Tutor as the figurehead, and so he released him and sent him to Arkham with instructions to begin the uprising. Tutor broadcast a message activating the other hypnotised civilians, who converged on Arkham. The Batgirls had deduced his location and went to Arkham to recapture him. Tutor fought Stephanie while Cassandra Cain fought his army.

During the fight, Tutor claimed that he was deprogramming the people of Gotham, but Stephanie told him that she liked being "broken" and didn't want to be changed. Oracle was able to broadcast a signal that freed the brainwashed citizens, but Tutor still suffered from paranoid delusions and attempted to detonate a bomb that would destroy the entire surrounding city block. Stephanie was able to drive the bomb into the river, so nobody was hurt. Tutor was incarcerated in Arkham Tower along with Spellbinder.
