Commius was ruler of the Atrebates and later a guardian of the Green.

Commius was a Roman who was installed as the king of the Atrebates tribe in Britannia. Over time, he adopted the Breton culture instead of his native Roman one. He later decided to overthrow the Roman rule by becoming the guardian of the Green and sent a message to the Romans occupying the land south of River Avon in 54 BCE about requiring their assistance in strengthening his own troops. The Romans obliged and when they arrived, were warmly welcomed by him. After the celebration of their arrival, he took them to the woods west of Avon river, claiming they'll be shown a ceremony no one has seen before.[1]

The Romans and the Atrebates arrived at a ring of giant stones, where the Breton tribe started preparing to perform a ritual. Commius told the Romans that the Bretons couldn't defeat them, but the woods they were in belonged to the Parliament of the Green. Commius was then slaughtered as per ritual. He was soon absorbed into the Green and came back its guardian, before proceeding to slaughter all the Romans except the weakest, so he could take the message to Julius Caesar about quitting Britannia. Shocked at what happened, Caesar wrote a fake account in which he described the land west of Avon river which the Roman Republic didn't need to bother about.[1]

Powers

  • The real Commius ruled in Gaul until 51 BCE and was not a Roman. The Atrebates meanwhile were a Belgic tribe and not Bretons.
