Quote1 I'm not giving up on him. I don't care if he's a jerk or a traitor or whatever. It's taken all this time to find him and I'm not giving up on my father. Quote2
Connor Hawke src

Connor Hawke is the son of Oliver Queen and Sandra Hawke. After his father's death, he became the second Green Arrow.

Origin

Born and raised in San Francisco, Connor was bullied as a child because of his mixed heritage (1/4 Korean, 1/4 African American, 1/2 Caucasian). He often fought back against his bullies, leading him to be expelled from four different schools. In an attempt to curb his anger issues before it led him to juvie, his mother, Moonday, told him the truth about his father being Green Arrow.

Connor kept and read everything he could about his father, idolising his newfound relation. His single mother often had difficulty finding work and in turn found it hard raising Connor. Due to Connor's problems in school, she decided to sign the papers allowing Connor to attend the same monastery that Oliver fled to for a brief time years before, located in Napa County, California. Master Jansen, the same monk who had helped Oliver, raised Connor for the next five years in the Ashram.

Through his schooling at the monastery, Connor spent every day studying Zen Buddhist philosophy, becoming a master of Aikido martial arts and Kyudo archery. As Connor endeavored to put all worldly thoughts out of his mind, he still secretly followed his father's exploits, reading every article, comic, and magazine centered around his father's life, always updating the scrapbook his Mother had given him. Once, Master Jansen caught Connor reading a HEROES magazine featuring Green Arrow and knew that it would be Connor's destiny to follow in his father's footsteps.

Meeting Oliver

After a troubled time in his career as Green Arrow, Oliver Queen decided to leave Seattle after Black Canary ended their relationship. Oliver wanted to find himself again and headed to the Ashram Monastery on a journey he once had gone before over a decade ago.[1] Once there, Oliver shaved his head and van dyke beard, and concentrated on finding himself and some sort of inner peace.

Surprisingly, what Oliver found instead was a young man named Connor Hawke who, unbeknownst to Oliver at the time, was his son. During his six month stay, Oliver would teach Connor aspects of himself, his beliefs, and the mindset needed to be the "hero" Green Arrow. The two would become friends, with Connor remembering Oliver's birthday even when the archer himself didn't. Ollie was his roommate and looked after Connor, who, at the time, was having trouble understanding the true philosophy of archery, despite being extremely skilled.

About six months after Ollie had re-entered the monastery, two NSA-employed mercenaries came looking to kill him. With the help of Connor, they defeated the assassins, but Ollie knew it wasn't safe to stay at the monastery. When leaving the Ashram, Connor joined him, claiming to want to learn to be a better archer from the best.[2]

Connor and Ollie fight together

Oliver and Connor work together

In an effort to discover who had sent the assassins after him, Oliver decided to contact Eddie Fyers, his old mercenary ally. While Ollie was finding Eddie, Connor was once again attacked by an assassin. Though he was able to stop him, more eventually showed up and managed to overpower him. Oliver shows up in time to help, and the two once again fight side by side to defeat the mercenaries.

After chasing down a lead, Oliver, Eddie, and Connor managed to capture one of the mercenaries, and interrogated him at a nearby motel. After getting confirmation that they were hired by the NSA, Oliver left to get supplies. While he was gone Eddie and Connor discussed what kind of man Ollie is, before being attacked once again. When they are safely away, they began to look for Ollie, who never returned with their food. While searching, Eddie revealed he knows Connor is Oliver's son, and guessed that Ollie didn't.

Unfortunately, Hal Jordan possessed by Parallax got a hold of Oliver first, and informed him that Connor was his son. This unfortunately sent Ollie on a downward spiral, believing Connor was using the secret as leverage. When Connor and Eddie found him, Ollie confronted Connor and accused him of lying. After shouting at the two, they parted on bad terms.

Not knowing where Ollie went, and unsure if he was alive or dead, Eddie contacted the only person he thought could help, Ollie's old sidekick, Roy Harper. Eddie and Connor explained the situation to him while Roy flew them to meet Oliver in Seattle. When they found Oliver, he yelled at them and sent them away, though they did not actually leave, eventually culminating in a fight.

Robin Hood Burial

Oliver is given a Robin Hood burial

Before Oliver and Connor could settle things between them, Oliver was killed in an explosion to save Metropolis from a terrorist group that was trying to detonated a mutagenic bomb. Oliver's body was vaporised in the explosion, leaving nothing to bury. After meeting Black Canary and informing her of Ollie's death, Connor was given one of Oliver's old bows, and told the story of Robin Hood's burial. Connor took the idea and returned to the Ashram. There he fired an arrow through the sky and into the nearby forest, marking Oliver's grave where it landed.[3]

The New Green Arrow

Connor continued to travel with one of his father's former allies, Eddie Fyers, accompanied at times by Connor's martial arts mentor Master Jansen, as he tried to find his place not only in the hero world, but also in the legacy of Green Arrow. Akin to the friendship between his father and Hal Jordan, Connor became quick friends with the new Green Lantern, Kyle Rayner, who himself was struggling to live up to a legacy.

Besides making friends, he also came face to face with Lady Shiva, said to be the deadliest assassin in the world, and was able to fight her almost to a stand-still, making him one of the very few to have survived battle with her.

Connor also applied for membership to the JLA, taking his father's place. On what would be his second interview, he single-handedly saved the League from the hands of the Key. Connor defeated the Key's robots using his father's old trick arrows since his own were destroyed. In the end, he knocked out the Key using the famous boxing glove arrow, and was accepted as a member of the League.[4]

He would later be used by Batman as a "traitor" in the League in a plot to defeat Lex Luthor's Injustice Gang. Connor would leave the League afterward, feeling he was better suited for the street-level work, and out of his element in the epic adventures of the Justice League, although he did remain on reserve status. Eddie Fyers and Connor would then return for a time to the ashram where Connor was raised, although they both often returned to the outside world, aiding Robin, Spoiler and Batgirl.

When Ollie returned from the dead, Connor left the ashram and tracked him down. Connor and Ollie moved in together in Star City, along with Mia Dearden, a teen runaway and trafficking survivor that Ollie had taken in and would later train as his new sidekick, Speedy.

Since returning to the superhero life, Connor was wounded seriously twice, once by the villain called Onomatopoeia and once by Constantine Drakon, but he continued in his hero role. He was the voice of reason for Ollie, and the two have since formed a real father-son relationship.

Blackest Night

Taking on the mantle of Green Arrow again, Connor travelled to Coast City to face Ollie after his transformation into a Black Lantern caused by Nekron. During their battle, Ollie mocked Connor, telling him that he always hated him because he reminded him of how old he was getting. Connor was hesitant to fight his father, but eventually stopped him by spraying him with liquid nitrogen, freezing him solid. After Ollie's defeat, Connor, Mia, and Dinah joined in the fight against the other Black Lanterns.[7]

The Fall of Green Arrow

After the destruction caused by Nekron's war, Connor returned to the ruins of Star City and tried to help maintain order. Connor was approached by Ollie, now a fugitive after having murdered Prometheus, the villain that destroyed the city in the first place. Ollie tried to talk to his son, but Connor angrily stated that his battle with his Black Lantern father somehow jogged his memory, and that he now remembered all the terrible things Ollie had done to him. When Ollie told Connor that he had thought he had forgiven him, Connor decided he no longer had the strength to forgive him for his transgressions. Though he wouldn't turn Ollie over to the Justice League, he also refused to help him, instead telling him to do the right thing for once in his life.[8]
