You are fast, Green Arrow-- Or you would now be as dead as Superman! How fatuous, to attack one such as I! But then, we've not met before! You do not know me, and so do not fear me! But I shall teach you to fear me, Green Arrow-- I shall burn that lesson into all of you! You will fear Count Crystal-- And then you will die, for the glory of Azgore!
- — Count Crystal src
Count Crystal was an evil sorcerer in league with the demon-lord Azgore.
History
Crystal offered Azgore the souls of the Justice League of America in exchange for enhanced powers. Crystal began by teleporting aboard the Justice League Satellite and striking Superman dead with a mystical attack, sending the Kryptonian's discorporated astral essence to the fire-and-brimstone realm of Azgore's domain. Sensing evil to be afoot, the Phantom Stranger activated Superman's Justice League Signal Device to summon Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Black Canary, and Hawkgirl. The seven heroes invaded a carnival-like location in an otherworldly magical dimension and challenged Crystal there. In the process, Crystal killed the Phantom Stranger and Hawkman and attempted to coerce Hawkgirl into "pleasuring" him throughout eternity in exchange for her life. Luckily, the Phantom Stranger anticipated the outcome of his death in the way of battle, and his soul successfully navigated Superman's and Hawkman's souls out of Azgore's clutches. Azgore considered himself to have been cheated by Crystal as such and appeared to claim Crystal's soul in his would-be victims' place. This also momentarily opened the metaphysical gateway between the afterlife and the mortal realm, allowing the Phantom Stranger, Superman, and Hawkman to return to life even as Count Crystal was dragged off to Hell.[1]
