Cronus is the leader and youngest of the first generation of Titans, the divine descendants of Gaea the Earth and Uranus the Sky. He overthrew his father and ruled during the mythological Golden Age until he was overthrown by his son Zeus and imprisoned in Tartarus.[4]
History
His father Uranus was a ruthless ruler and Gaea asked her son Cronus to kill him, becaming the new king of Olympus and the lord of all creation. It was prophesied then that Cronus would be killed by one of his children just as he had overthrown his father. As a result, when Demeter, Hestia, Hera, Hades and Poseidon were born he devoured them, to try to prevent the prophecy. When his wife Rhea was pregnant with their sixth child, Zeus, she sought Gaea to devise a plan to save them and to eventually get retribution on Cronus for eating their children. Rhea secretly gave birth to Zeus, and handed Cronus a stone wrapped in cloth, which he promptly swallowed, thinking that it was his child. Rhea took Zeus away and kept him hidden.[4]
When he grew to manhood, Zeus returned to face his father, using his wife Metis to seduce Cronus and slip a magic herb into his wine to make him vomit up two of his siblings, Poseidon and Hades.[4] Zeus also released the Cyclopes, who helped forge his Thunderbolts, Poseidon's Trident and Hades' Helmet of Darkness.[citation needed] They battled the Titans of Myth and became the new rulers of the Earth by slaying Cronus and forging a pact in his dead remains. These siblings became the Olympian gods and goddesses; Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades then divided the heavens, seas, and the underworld among themselves. Cronus and the other Titans were then locked in Tartarus for an indefinite time.[3]
Return
Millennia later, Cronus was magically brought back to life. He unleashed his terrible children — Arch, Disdain, Harrier, Oblivion, Slaughter, and Titan - upon the unsuspecting Earth, hoping to rule the universe once more.[4] Cronus set the Olympian and Hindu pantheons against each other in an epic war of the gods. However Wonder Woman shattered Cronus's sickle, holder of the collected power of the Godwave, and shortly he died once again when he tried to claim the power of the Presence and was overwhelmed.[citation needed]
