- The title of the episode is a reference to the quote "E.T. phone home" from the movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.
- Due to it 1988 setting, this episode makes many references to popular 80s films, such as Back to the Future when a DeLorean is shown and Nate mentions that it's a "true time machine", Aliens when Amaya says a twist on Ripley's popular line "Get away from her, you bitch", and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial where it takes many plot references from as well as the famous flying past the moon scene.
- The games Tecmo Bowl and The Legend of Zelda are also referenced, which also released in the 80s.
- The costume Zari wears in this episode is based on the same outfit worn by Isis from the TV series, The Secrets of Isis.
