The DC Extended Universe (DCEU)[2] is the shared universe of several live-action DC movies, starting with Man of Steel. It also includes some comic books, video games, and TV series.
History
The DC Extended Universe is set on Earth-1 in the Arrowverse post-crisis multiverse. Various advanced races from many worlds reside here, but its Earth's technology and connection to other planets and alien races is rather primitive compared to other universes. In this world, Wonder Woman was Earth's premiere superhero in 1917, but despite various vigilantes like the Batman operating in Gotham City since the 1990s, superheroes didn't become a big part of human culture until Superman and Zod's battle in 2013. Soon after this, there was a huge influx in metahuman activity, leading to the formation of teams like the Justice League, the Suicide Squad, and Project Butterfly to protect the world from threats like Lord Darkseid, Starro the Conqueror, and Eek Stack Ik Ik.[3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

Notes
- When originally announced, the TV series Krypton was going to be set in the DCEU, but it was later decided to set it within its own universe.[11]
- The film The Batman was originally supposed to be set in the DCEU, and act as a solo film for Ben Affleck's version of the character, but when Affleck left the project, Matt Reeves stepped in as director, reworked the film into being set in a new universe, and recast Affleck with Robert Pattinson as a new Batman.
Trivia
- The "DC Extended Universe" name was coined by Zack Snyder, the director of Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Justice League.[2]
- An alternate version of Justice League, entitled Zack Snyder's Justice League, premiered on HBO Max in 2021. While it heavily contradict the events of Justice League, the question as to which version will be canon moving forward still remains, as it contradicts no other DCEU material beyond small details like Superman's costume.
