"Birth of the Atom!": This story is reprinted from Showcase #34.

DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #9 is an issue of the series DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest (Volume 1) with a cover date of May, 1981.

Synopsis for "Birth of the Atom!"

This story is reprinted from Showcase #34.

When physics graduate student Ray Palmer finds a White Dwarf Star Fragment, he creates a lens out of it. When ultraviolet light is shone through the lens, it becomes a shrinking device. However, all of his tests find that every object he shrinks with the lens explode after several minutes.

One day while taking out his fiancée Jean Loring and a hiking club to a cave, they get trapped by an avalanche. Going on his own to find a way out, Ray decides to use his Dwarf Star lens to shrink himself down in size to climb up to an opening and make it larger, using an engagement ring he has for Jean.

After succeeding in making an opening, Ray returns to his original size, and believes that he survived the experience when drippings from the cave landed on the lens. However, after everyone is safe, Ray still finds that his lens still cause items to explode after an hour, leaving Ray to realize that perhaps something in his own body prevents him from being destroyed when staying at a small size for an extended period of time.

Synopsis for "Battle of the Tiny Titans!"

This story is reprinted from Showcase #34.

When one of Jean Loring's friend Alma Wilson is accused of stealing money from the bank where she works as a teller, Alma explains that a little man appeared and stole the money. When Jean tells Ray that her friend Alma is a trustworthy person, Ray decides to see what he can do with his shrinking powers.

Having created a costume and dubbing himself the Atom, Ray springs into action, however before he can investigate he finds the strange little man appearing in his laboratory.

After a battle against the little man, he learns that his opponent is an alien named Kulan Dar. Dar is from Julnar, where the inhabitants can teleport across the universe when they injest the element Europium. However, arriving on Earth, he became prisoner of a crook who took control of his will bending device, the Dominator, and has been using him to commit robberies on his behalf.

With the help of Kulan, the Atom tracks the criminal down and after a battle against Dar, who is back under the crook's control, the Atom manages to defeat him and turn him over to the authorities. Kulan Dar literally appears in court and clears Jean's friend Alma of all charges before returning to his home planet.

Synopsis for "Swamp Thing"

This story is reprinted from House of Secrets #92.

Sometime in the last century, Alex Olsen and Damien Ridge had been best friends. However, they both vied for the affections of a woman named Linda. Linda eventually married Alex and Damien had to endure his heartache in the form of the supportive friend. But his desire for Linda overrode the bonds of friendship and he conspired to eliminate Alex. He sabotaged the equipment in Alex's lab causing an explosion that killed him. Keeping the knowledge hidden from Linda, Damien buried Alex's body in the swamp.

Damien eventually married the widow Olsen, and they lived together in an old Victorian plantation house. But Linda never recovered from Alex's death. As months passed, Damien began to suspect that Linda might soon learn the truth, so he prepared to kill her. But Alex had been resurrected as a swamp thing and broke into the house and killed Damien. Linda fled from the creature in horror, never realizing that the beast who saved her was her beloved Alex.

Synopsis for "The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl!"

This story is reprinted from Detective Comics #359.

Barbara Gordon, daughter of Gotham City Police Commissioner, James Gordon, prepares to attend a policeman's charity masquerade ball. She designs a costume in the style of Batman and names herself, Batgirl.

As she arrives at the country club, she finds a villain named Killer Moth and his Moth-Men attacking one of the guests, Bruce Wayne. Batgirl dives into them, giving Wayne a chance to escape. Bruce takes this opportunity to change into Batman, then returns to the spot to give Batgirl a hand. Killer Moth uses his silk gun to web Batgirl to the side of Bruce's car, and then escapes with his underlings. Batman pulls Batgirl free and introductions are made between the two.

The following day, Bruce Wayne receives a letter in the mail. Killer Moth wants him to pay $100,000 or else he will murder him. Bruce consults with Dick Grayson and the two lay a trap for Killer Moth.

That evening, Barbara Gordon leaves the library where she works. She has acquired a rare book that she intends on selling to Bruce Wayne. As she arrives at Wayne Manor, she finds Bruce lying dead in his study, with Killer Moth and his goons hovering above him. She hurriedly changes into Batgirl and leaps into the study. She fights off all three men at once, but once again, they succeed in escaping. Batman and Robin appear and tell her that the body of Bruce Wayne is actually just a dummy. They were laying a trap for Killer Moth in the hopes of tracking him back to his lair, but Batgirl spoiled their plans. Fortunately, Batgirl had planted a tracer on the Mothmobile so they can easily trail their foes back to Moth Mansion.

Batman and Robin arrive at the mansion first and enter through the front foyer. They suddenly discover that the room is in fact a gravity-well and they begin floating towards the ceiling. Batgirl follows in behind them and uses magnetic boots to keep herself on the floor. She disables the gravity-well, setting the caped crusaders free.

Batgirl manages to find the secret closet panel where Killer Moth is hiding. Batman and Robin each knock him out with one solid double punch. After taking the villain to prison, they say goodbye to Batgirl wondering when, or if, they will ever meet her again.

Synopsis for "The Kid from Atlantis!"

This story is reprinted from Adventure Comics #269.

One day while on patrol, Aquaman comes across a small boy sleeping in a craft, upon waking the boy, he finds that the child is scared of sea life. Calling his undersea friends away, Aquaman finds that the boy has purple eyes, marking him as one of the people of Atlantis. Aquaman soon learns that the boy was rejected by the society of Atlantis because he was deathly afraid of marine life. Aquaman then takes it upon himself to teach the boy that he has nothing to fear from aquatic life. The boy --dubbed Aqualad -- finally overcomes his fear when he helps Aquaman land a plane with the aid of luminous fish. Cured of his phobia, Aqualad is brought back to Atlantis to rejoin his people. The next day, Aquaman finds that he misses the boy, and is soon shocked when Aqualad reappears, explaining that he much prefers living with Aquaman as his sidekick to returning to Atlantis.

Synopsis for "The Origin of Green Lantern's Oath!"

This story is reprinted from Green Lantern (Volume 2) #10.

One day while watching Green Lantern charge his power ring, Pieface asks Hal where the oath he speaks came from. Hal tells Pieface that it started after three of his most earliest cases that inspired him to say the oath each time he charged his power ring. "In Brightest Day" was inspired by a time when Green Lantern battled crooks who used a blinding light to prevent people from stopping them from making their heists, whom Hal managed to capture. "In Blackest Night" came from another adventure when Hal had to travel into a foggy cave in order to round up some bandits. And "No Evil Shall Escape My Sight" came from a time when Carol's safe was stolen, and Hal (as Green Lantern) was able to find the crooks who took it by scouring the city with his power ring.

Synopsis for "The Super-Dog from Krypton!"

This story is reprinted from Adventure Comics #210.

When a white dog in Smallville exhibits super-powers, Superboy investigates and finds a Kryptonian rocket ship in which the dog came to Earth. He learns that the dog is Krypto, his own pet from babyhood, and that Jor-El sent him into space in an experimental rocket that was knocked off-course by a meteor. Superboy has a good time romping with Krypto, but he causes problems with his tasks and his secret identity. The Superdog eventually returns to exploring space, and though Superboy is glad to be free of trouble, he is sorrowful that his dog is gone again.

Nabu passes his powers to Kent

1920: As a young child, Kent Nelson was exploring Mesopotamia with his father. Sven Nelson was an archaeologist who believed that the Pyramids were not created by Egyptians, but by beings from another planet. Nelson had found an old temple in the desert, and while he was in the Chamber of History reading inscriptions, young Kent wandered off alone. The boy found a fully colored statue, extremely tall, of Nabu the Wise, who telepathically signaled him to operate a nearby lever. This brought Nabu back to life, but also released poisonous gas that flooded the outer temple and killed Kent's father.
To repay him for his loss, Nabu promised to teach the young child the secrets of the universe. He said that through learning molecular control of his body, he had grown to almost half a million years old, and was born on the planet Cilia, as it passed Earth in orbit. Nabu raised Kent into young manhood, and taught him skills such as levitation and telekinesis. Nelson grew to love Nabu as he had loved his own father. Nabu hoped one day to return to Cilia. Kent Nelson's training went on for an unknown length of time, and at the end of it he was an adult, and Nabu told the newly-named Doctor Fate that his mission was to do good and fight against evil, then Nabu passed on his amulet, cloak and helmet.
While returning to America, Kent met a woman named Inza Cramer in Alexandria who would become his traveling companion.

Fate challenged Negal

In the present day Kent Nelson and Inza Cramer are attending a dinner party in New York City, where they meet a man who believes he is being haunted. The man is a believer in reincarnation and had made a pact with several friends to help them return to life in case of their death, but finds that their spirits are now trying to claim his soul. Kent returns to his tower in Salem, and comes back as Doctor Fate. Driving the ghosts back easily, he realizes he must stop them at their source by visiting the underworld of Charn.

Inza insists on accompanying Fate through the Charnal Regions and into a world of shadows. Seated on a great stone throne is the gigantic Negal, wielding an immense thorned club in one hand and a horned skull in the other. Fate confronts him and orders him to never again invade the Earth; Negal mocks; Fate gestures; the skull in Negal's hand vanishes. Fate repeats his terms and Negal accepts them. The worlds of the dead and living will remain unmixed.

Synopsis for "The Green Arrow's First Case!"

This story is reprinted from Adventure Comics #256.

When an expedition of Starfish Island is reported to begin, Green Arrow is concerned that it will lead to the revelation that he is the Green Arrow. Oliver explains to Speedy that Starfish Island was where the Green Arrow was born, explaining that one night years when he was "Just Oliver Queen, wealthy playboy, world traveler" he fell overboard from a ship while on a voyage in the South Seas. Oliver managed to swim to Starfish Island, off of regular shipping lanes and surrounded by rocky shoals. He took up residence in a nearby cavern and, after finding a water spring, began to devise arrows with which to catch fish.

After days of practice, Queen became a crack shot with the bow. When he shot his first fish with an arrow, though, he learned that he couldn't keep it from swimming away with the shaft. Thus, he designed a rope arrow by tying a vine onto the end of his shaft, and landed the fish he shot with it. Later, he designed a net arrow with which to catch many fish, and a drill arrow to knock down and pierce coconuts. He also designed a green outfit for himself from tree leaves, and began chiseling a diary on the cave wall.

One evening, Oliver saw a ship in the distance, swam out to it, and learned that the crew was in mutiny. He masked himself by rubbing anchor-chain grease around his eyes, then nabbed the mutineers with his trick arrows. When the captain asked his name, Queen replied, "The Green Arrow! Yes, that's it--just call me the Green Arrow!"

Roy realizes that the diary Oliver carved on the cavern wall can betray his mentor's identity. When Green Arrow sees an expedition member holding a Geiger counter, he fires a "Fake Uranium Arrow" at the ground, and the resulting clicks on the Geiger counter convince the explorers that the island is radioactive from H-bomb fallout. They leave, enabling the archers to destroy the cave-diary and safeguard Green Arrow's secret.

Synopsis for "The World's Worst Archer!"

This story is reprinted from Adventure Comics #262.

Trained in archery by Brave Bow, an Indian his father once rescued, Roy Harper attempts to impress Green Arrow with his archery skills. However, every time he tries to show Green Arrow his abilities, the arrows seem to veer away from their appointed targets. Not giving up, and helping Green Arrow stop some robbers, both soon learn the reason why Roy's arrows never hit their targets: The non-flit arrows were vulnerable to the magnets inside the Arrowcar. Afterward, Green Arrow accepts Roy as his new partner, Speedy.
