Synopsis for "Destination Doom"

This story is reprinted from Strange Adventures #14.

An alien race visits Earth and demands "one average specimen." The government agrees to their demands and asks Captain Comet not to interfere with the transaction. Captain Comet understands, and enters his alter ego's name (Adam Blake: mild-mannered library clerk) in the sacrificial lottery. At the draw, a dozen names have been placed in a jar and will be selected at random. Adam Blake (Captain Comet), projects his "Telematic Force" to be the chosen one. Adam is selected and is escorted to the alien's gigantic spaceship. Once on board, he meets fellow "average specimens" from other planets. Hours later, he is ready to confront the alien kidnappers, but is astounded to find that the ship is piloting itself. He and the other captives are the only ones on board. The ship lands and the captives are caged. They learn that the alien planet is a world of machines which were former slaves to the human race. The machines finally took over, and the humans were dying off too quickly. The machines realized they could not manufacture more humans to be their slaves. Thus, they captured Adam, and the other specimens, so they could teach them "how to construct human beings." After hearing this explanation, one of the captives breaks free and attacks a robot. Adam seizes the moment, and joins in the fight as Captain Comet. During the confusion, Comet is able to rescue the remaining captives and head to the generating stations. There, he smashes and bends the the generator poles, causing all the robots and machines to short-circuit and freeze. Later, Comet is able to fix a "voyager rocket" in order for the remaining captives to leave the dreaded planet.
