Danny the Ambulance (originally Danny the Street) is a teleporting, genderqueer, sentient street that became an ambulance. Sweet and accepting, they can appear anywhere in the world and provide a home to those who feel like misfits in society, mainly members of the LGBTQ community.
History
Friendship with Niles
Danny can communicate through signs and billboards but cannot speak, see or hear through normal means. At some point in the past, Danny met Niles Caulder, a scientist. In 1927, Danny welcomed Caulder and his daughter Dorothy Spinner, who possessed The Candlemaker, a dangerous being in Dorothy's mind, offering to take care of her. Danny also met the superhero, Flex Mentallo and his wife Dolores.[3][4][5]
Niles regularly visited Dorothy at Danny's. In the 1940s, Danny was in hiding in England during another visit from Niles, so they confronted him by not letting Dorothy live a normal life, bugging Niles because it would be dangerous. Picking up several gay and socially shunned people, Danny gave them lodging during their travels. Already in the present day, Danny was visited by Agent Morris Wilson, a worker for the Bureau of Normalcy, an agency seeking to capture strange beings. Feeling identified, Morris warned Danny, forcing them and their Dannyzens.[2][3]
Helping their friends
In 2019, Danny sent a cake with their current address to Doom Manor seeking help in Niles, but instead, cyber vigilante, Vic Stone, and nuclear man, Larry Trainor, also friends of Niles, went to Danny, meeting Morris, now known as Maura Lee Karupt, offering her help against the bureau. Danny explained the situation of the bureau's search to Larry, who had also been tortured. Bravely, Maura, Vic, Larry and the Dannyzens battled psychotic agent Darren Jones and the bureau agents, winning Danny's freedom, making everyone happy again.[3]
After the battle, Danny spoke with Vic, learning that Niles was kidnapped by the dangerous Mister Nobody. Danny refused to help out of fear of Nadie, but instead gave Vic a special comic to seek Flex's help, sending their two new friends to the mansion. Days later, Beard Hunter, a metahuman capable of eating beards, found Dorothy on his search for Niles and met Manny, an imaginary friend of Dorothy's, but before he could die, Danny saved Beard Hunter, allowing him to be with them.[3][6]
Later, Danny was again visited by Larry and his group of friends, including Flex, glad to see their old friend, happily reuniting with Flex, sharing a hug with Flex to comfort him for Dolores's death while the team interrogated Beard Hunter to find Niles. Finally agreeing to bravely help the group, Danny revealed to know where Nobody, the mysterious White Space, was hiding, prompting Flex to send the team to save Niles after he had an accidental orgasm.[5]
A New Journey
Months later, Danny was attacked by Nobody and the Brotherhood of Dangerous Animals, a group of villains made up of Ezekiel the Cockroach and Admiral Whiskers, a vengeful rat, who imprisoned Danny in a magical painting, but Flex managed to save the Dannyzens in time. Not being able to help Dorothy, the Brotherhood attempted to capture her, causing Ezekiel and Whiskers to grow giant, attacking Danny.
Seeking help, Danny enlisted the help of Beard Hunter to sing a song, alerting Niles to summon the group to their rescue, informing Dorothy of the danger she was in. When the group arrived, Danny alerted them to the Brotherhood, so they devised a plan to free Danny and save Dorothy, forming an alliance with Nobody. After Larry's radioactive blast, Danny destroyed themself like a street, turning into a brick, living in the manor with the team, now in tiny form until they grew to their normal size.[1][7]
While the group was away, Danny played with Dorothy and her imaginary friends hide-and-seek and other games until Dorothy accidentally tore Danny in two, temporarily killing them, causing Niles to worry, so he called Flex, Maura and the Dannyzens to revive Danny. When Dorothy sang a special song for her friend, Danny finally revived, ceasing to be a brick, thanking Dorothy and starting a party. Danny was confronted by Dorothy, who was being manipulated by the Candlemaker, to find out if they were really friends, although Danny wished they were, since Niles forced them to keep her as a kind of prisoner, apologizing to Dorothy and after the party, Danny argued with Niles, refusing to go back to being a street so Dorothy would be free.[8][2]
In their new form, Danny turned into a wheel, starting a new journey with the Dannyzens, saying goodbye to Dorothy and their friends, leaving the manor to travel the world and help people like them. A few months later, Danny, now turned into an ambulance, visited the manor, taking Dorothy with Niles' corpse for burial, teleporting with her. Weeks after the funeral, Danny went in search of the Dead Boy Detective Agency, a trio of teenagers who handle paranormal cases, hiring them to help Dorothy and Larry successfully revive their friends.[2][9][10]
