Are we in an alternate dimension? Why are we fighting our old villains?
Dark Crisis: Young Justice #2 is an issue of the series Dark Crisis: Young Justice (Volume 1) with a cover date of September, 2022. It was published on July 19, 2022.
Synopsis for "A Tale of Two Cassies"
Young Justice fight Mighty Endowed, and for the first time in a long time Tim Drake is having fun. Cassie fights Dowd one-on-one and Bart makes a lecherous comment at the sight. He is immediately ashamed of himself and the others are surprised, but Conner laughs it off and claims Bart is back to his old self. Bart denies he has ever acted like that before but Tim tells him not to worry about it.
After they defeat Mighty Endowed, the boys try to work out where they are and how they got there, but Cassie suggests a joyride in the Super-Cycle instead. As they ride, Tim reflects that they all seem more innocent and carefree than they have in years. They suddenly get a call from Oracle, telling them that they need to stop Tora. Tim suggests they call Jon Kent, Damian Wayne and Wallace West; the younger heroes who replaced them, for help, but Cassie claims she has never heard of those people and Conner declares it is down to them. In Metropolis, Young Justice quickly defeat Tora, but Bart is bemused by her cartoonishly stereotypical behavior. Tim asks Cassie if she has any idea what is going on, and Cassie replies that she has not and suggests they speak to the Justice League.
Meanwhile on Earth 0, the real Cassie goes to Cardy Boarding School to ask Cissie King-Jones for help searching for the boys. Cissie tells Cassie that she does not have the same nostalgia for their childhood that Cassie does. She points out that many of the people Young Justice fought were from marginalised communities, and that Cassie only ever comes to see her when the boys need help. Cissie tells Cassie that she has built her life around Tim, Conner and Bart, and accuses her of enjoying being the responsible girl who looks after a group of chaotic boys. She also says that she quit being a superhero because she did not want to also be overshadowed by the boys for the rest of her life. She agrees to help, but tells Cassie that when the search is over she never wants to see any of them again. Cassie tries to apologise, saying she didn't realise how Cissie felt, but Cissie tells her it is too late.
In the other reality, Cassie takes the boys to the Justice League Watchtower on the moon. As soon as they arrive, Cassie speeds away and each of the boy's former mentors asks to speak with them in private. Superboy meets with Superman and Cassie, who invite him to become Superman; Connor points out that Clark chose Jon Kent as his successor, but they tell him that he deserves to be Superman. At the same time, Impulse meets with the Flash and what appears to be another Cassie. Bart tries to tell Wally that he feels like something is wrong with the world, but Wally dismisses his concerns and assumes he is just joking, and Cassie tells him that they want him to become the next Flash. Meanwhile, Robin speaks with Batman and yet another Cassie, who invites him to become Batman, telling him it is what he has always wanted. Tim thinks to himself he's no longer sure if that's true: he has long accepted that Damian will be Bruce's successor, not him, but at the same time he doesn't know who he is if he isn't going to be Batman. He is also shocked when Cassie tells him that he is meant to be with Stephanie Brown, and Bruce refers to his bisexuality and relationship with Bernard as a "phase".
The three meet up after talking to their mentors. Tim is still stunned and says that Batman would never say anything like that, while Bart admits he had forgotten how distant his relationship with Wally was before Barry Allen came back from the dead. They agree something is wrong with the world they are in, saying it feels like an immature, deliberately offensive version of their past. However, Conner still wants to stay, saying that if this world is real, he won't have to die. Suddenly, Bart realises that Cassie has disappeared.
On Earth 0, the real Cassie and Cissie King-Jones confront Red Volcano, hoping to find his "brother" Red Tornado, Young Justice's former advisor. Red Volcano attacks them, but Red Tornado comes to save them and agrees to help them search.
In the other universe, Tim, Bart and Conner have returned to Earth to search for Cassie. They shamefully realise that none of them know where Cassie goes when she isn't with them, and so Tim suggests they split up and search for her. He says he will start in Gotham, as the last time he saw her she was with Batman, but the others each say she was with them and their mentors. As soon as Tim wonders how Cassie could be in multiple places at once, the reflection of a mysterious face appears in the bonnet of the Super-Cycle and it speeds up and hits a crag of rock the appears out of nowhere, sending them flying. Then, just as suddenly, the earth cracks open and zombies emerge. They try to fight, but Bart and Conner's powers mysteriously don't work near the zombies and Tim orders a retreat. Superboy flies them back to Mount Justice, where they find Cassie unconscious on the floor with Captain Boomerang, Deathstroke and Lex Luthor looming over her.
