Synopsis for "The Trinity of Trauma"

Robin, Superboy and Impulse return to Mount Justice and find Wonder Girl being held hostage by Captain Boomerang, Deathstroke and Lex Luthor. Superboy insists that they rush in and save Cassie, but Impulse suspects that it may be a trick to distract them, pointing out that the three villains seem to have been chosen specifically to hurt them: Deathstroke crippled Impulse, Captain Boomerang murdered Robin's father, and Superboy has never come to terms with being Luthor's "son". Bart advises caution, but the others jump into the fight regardless.

Impulse disarms Deathstroke at superspeed and points his own gun at him, exactly as he has fantasised about doing dozens of times. Cassie encourages Bart to kill Slade, and when he looks at her he sees what look like tracking lines from an old computer program centered on her. He drops the gun and confronts Cassie, believing she is somehow controlling the world around them. Connor defends her and the two fight until Robin breaks it up. As soon as they all take their attention away from the villains they disappear, and Impulse again confronts Cassie, accusing her of being a fake. Connor again defends her, while Robin admits that something strange is going on but insists they need more data before they accuse Cassie. Impulse storms off, claiming they never listen to him; but when Connor tells Tim to let Bart go and that he is ruining everything, Tim also leaves.

Impulse runs back to Central City, angry that everyone only ever sees him as a goof. He suddenly notices that everything looks undetailed and colourless. When he slows down everything appears normal, but if he speeds up all he can see are outlines. He realises that the world operates like the virtual reality he grew up in; if he moves too fast it can't keep up and the environment around him doesn't fully "load", demonstrating that it is also a construct. Cassie, fully detailed and seemingly moving at the same speed as him, appears and tells him that if he accepts this world he can have everything he wants; not only will he be the next Flash, but he will be respected and taken seriously. However, Bart refuses, saying there is always a price and he's not willing to pay it.

Two other Cassies simultaneously meet with Robin and Superboy, offering them everything they want, but even Connor refuses, realising that she is not the real Cassie. The three Cassies teleport the boys back to the Watchtower with a snap of her fingers. The lone Cassie on the Watchtower tells them that they have angered the creator of the world, and if they won't accept it then "he" will force them to. She unleashes an army of duplicate heroes on the boys.
