Green Arrow src

Oliver "Ollie" Queen is the Green Arrow, a vigilante who uses a bow and arrow to fight crime at a street level, while espousing socially liberal values.

Early Life

Origins

While in high school, Oliver rolled his car on a curve and ended up in the hospital with more than a few broken bones. Robert wouldn't stop crying. When Oliver asked him why, his father told him, "Because you're me."[2]

During his college years, Oliver dated Sandra Hawke; in the process, he fathered a son: Connor Hawke. Though he was present for Connor's birth, he would not remain in his son's life, abandoning Connor and Sandra.[3]

As the young heir to a billion dollar corporate dynasty at Queen Industries, Oliver Queen was a wild socialite. His behavior so shamed his father Robert that he was relegated to clerical work on an oil rig in the Pacific. Naturally, Oliver turned the rig into a hub for his parties. At one such party, a helicopter meant to be carrying a famous rock star was commandeered by oil-thieving terrorists, who soon took over the rig.

Against the warnings of his friend Tommy Merlyn, Oliver recklessly faced the terrorist leader armed with only a bow and arrow, courtesy of his father's to this point fruitless training. The terrorists were armed with a detonator to a battery of explosives, including some which they had strapped to Oliver's girlfriend Leena. Oliver managed to shoot the detonator out of the terrorist's hand, but it bounced and activated, blowing up half the rig, and killing Leena. Fortunately for Oliver, his life was saved by Tommy - but his friend had taken the brunt of the blast, and was very badly burnt. After this, Oliver washed up on the shore of Starfish Island, and was forced to survive with only his bow and arrow for a year. He faced many trials and tribulations during his time there, including brief imprisonment and torture by a pair of masked figured.[4]. Eventually, he was rescued- and returned to civilization a changed man.

Zero Year

Oliver returned during the Zero Year, and subsequently learned about the Gotham blackout, and the fact that his mother Moira Queen went there to help. Realizing that his mother could be in danger, Oliver insisted on going straight to Gotham to find her. She was being targeted by Killer Moth, who was stopped with the combined efforts of Batman and the debuting Green Arrow.[5]

Gaining Allies

One month after becoming the Green Arrow, Oliver became injured one night, bleeding out and in need of assistance. He payed a visit to his company's head of security, John Diggle. After Diggle patched Oliver up, Oliver asked him to join him in his crusade to protect the city. Oliver trusted Diggle due to him not revealing his identity to anyone or telling anyone he was back, and the fact that Diggle was willing to protect Oliver's mother's life with his own. Diggle joined Oliver's crusade and the two operated as a team to protect the city.[5]

Shortly after his debut, Oliver inadvertently began a lifelong blood feud with Malcolm Merlyn, member of the League of Assassins when he beat him in an archery contest at a circus[6], likely compounded by Oliver's involvement in the apparent death of Merlyn's son, Tommy.

One evening, Oliver made a visit to a local mall; coincidentally, this mall was being squatted in by Roy Harper, who hacked the mall's camera feeds in order to hide his presence. While Oliver was making his visit, Roy picked his pocket. Oliver soon realized it, and, when he came to get the wallet back, was intrigued by the strange boy. After some discussion, Oliver decided to take him in, with Roy working as tech support for Oliver. Though they worked together for some time, Roy began to want to work in the field, and Oliver was reluctant to let him put himself in danger, remembering Tommy's warnings that his recklessness would get people killed.[7]

Following the apparent death of Moira Queen, Oliver withdrew from his role as Green Arrow and began heavily drinking. Diggle confronted him about it, and the following argument resulted in Diggle quitting.

Early Career

Green Arrow and Speedy Prime Earth 001

Oliver, with Roy as Speedy

Roy and Oliver eventually began working alongside one another in the field, with Roy using his nickname 'Speedy' as a codename. While working as his sidekick, Roy designed Green Arrow's elaborate trick arrows, much to the Oliver's frustration.[7] At some point, he grew a goatee.

He would later become a member of the Justice League, though his outspoken positions would frequently render him an outsider. During this period Ollie would regularly have adventures with Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern, and Dinah Drake-Lance who acted as secondary mentors to Roy.[8]

Out of what some believed was a desperate desire to be Batman, Oliver constructed the 'Arrow-Cave', an underground hideout analogous to the Bat-Cave. He used the facility to house a good deal of memorabilia over the course of his career, including statues of his rogues gallery and a map of Starfish Island.[9]

In the original New 52 continuity, Oliver did not have a history with the Justice League, and didn't join the league until much later, when Amanda Waller founded a version of the JLA. This was later revised by subsequent continuity changes.

At some point, Oliver, Dinah, and Roy made a trip to a haunted house in Star City; Roy had a blast, but Oliver kept his eyes closed the entire time.[10]

Early on in their respective careers, a conflict with the Clock King resulted in Oliver and Roy being displaced in time, arriving in the 1940s. While stuck there, they became core members of the Seven Soldiers of Victory. Oliver also shaved his beard during this period, later citing a belief that during the 1940s, only bad guys had beards. Eventually, the Seven Soldiers themselves were lost in time fighting the celestial huntsman Neh-Buh-Loh, an incident that also resulted in the apparent deaths of Lee Travis and Wing How.

This battle caused Oliver and Roy to return the present day, though their absence in their own time had done serious damage to their relationships in the present day. As a result of this excursion, Oliver and Roy had the peculiar distinction of being both the 'golden age' and modern iterations of a heroic mantle, though they had no way of knowing this when they first took up the titles.[11] Following their excursion to the Golden Age, Oliver began to use the Arrow-Cave less and less, but not before installing a memorial to the original Seven Soldiers.[12]

While Roy was in High School, his grades started slipping as a result of lack of enthusiasm and his attention being spread too thin between his work with Oliver and his escapades with the Teen Titans. On the advice of fellow leaguers Batman and Flash, Oliver attempted to reorient his parenting style. He benched Roy as Speedy, stating that he'd be allowed to return to his role as Speedy when his grades recovered. This continued for nine weeks; while Roy's grades did show drastic improvement, he was miserable. After some tension, he eventually allowed Roy to resume his role as Speedy after they talked it over and Oliver apologized to Roy for his shortcomings as a parent and made it clear to Roy that his dream for him was for him to have a full life in every aspect, not just as a Superhero.[13]

However, when Roy became addicted to painkillers and subsequently began to abuse harder drugs, Oliver reacted poorly, essentially casting his ward out. Though he eventually came to his senses, their relationship was permanently altered.

When Hal Jordan became possessed by the fear-thing, Parallax, Oliver was involved in efforts to defeat his former ally during the Crisis in Time, and in the end, he fired an arrow into the heart of his longtime friend.[14]. Oliver later died, and despite his attempt on Jordan's life, a portion of the real Hal managed to fight its way to the surface, and, using his power as Parallax, resurrected Oliver Queen in a new body.

While Oliver was deceased, his estranged son, Connor Hawke took over his role as the Green Arrow. Oliver was later reborn[15].

Like many heroes whose careers had birthed legacies, Oliver was greatly effected by the consequences of the Flashpoint, which resulted in him forgetting the existence of his son and much of his time with the Justice League and his longtime paramour, Dinah Lance.

The Midas Touch

Oliver had begun using his subsidiary technology company Q-Core as a front for his activities as Green Arrow with the help of a hacker named Naomi and an engineer called Jax. These activities, though, interfered with his real job as the CEO of Queen Industries, much to the annoyance of his father's old friend Emerson, who was the head of the board of directors.[16]

Even as he was warned that he would be removed from the board if he didn't do PR for Q-Core, Oliver was on the trail of a super-criminal called Rush, who was achieving fame by posting videos of his crimes on the internet.[17] After spending a harrowing evening fighting Rush, Oliver defeated him. By way of meeting Emerson's demands, he held a press conference to warn against giving up a life of accomplishment for one of apps and videos. This only served to anger Emerson, since it essentially condemned Q-Core's products as a waste of time.[18]

Green Arrow faces Midas

Oliver had made his assistant Adrien his proxy at Queen Industries, so Emerson forced him to sign over veto power to her, further weakening his grasp on the company he was born into.[19] Meanwhile, an assassin called Blood Rose and her companion Midas had staked a claim on the Seattle waterfront, taking control of its gangs. She had also targeted the billionaire Oliver Queen for death, unaware that he was the same Green Arrow that had been interrupting her gang activities.[20] At their first encounter, she was injured, making her mysterious protector worry for her.

Midas was once a scientist, working on a method for using bacteria to dispose of toxic waste. He was seduced by a misinformed undercover eco-terrorist, who caused an explosion that - when caught in the blast - turned Midas into a monster. He had become a man made almost entirely of toxic waste. His only comfort was Blood Rose, and as revenge for her injury, Midas decided to kidnap Adrien in order to lure Oliver out.[21]

Green Arrow managed to get Adrien to safety and overcome Midas with his trick arrows, but Blood Rose appeared to rescue him, sparing Green Arrow's life in favour of killing Oliver Queen. After getting back to his base, Naomi revealed that Blood Rose was actually an android - and they could track her. Soon, Green Arrow bursted into her hide-out, and filled her body with a high-voltage shock. Midas turned on him, but was caught unaware by a new arrow that used the very same kind of chemical that he had been trying to develop to eat away at his body. While he saw to his wound, Blood Rose gave chase, only to be blown up by an explosive arrow.

Oliver returned her remains to Midas, who admitted that he had built her, and that he had fallen in love with her as well - but her robotic head began to count down to a self-destruct, requiring Oliver to run for his life. Presumably, Midas and Blood Rose were both destroyed - but in fact, Midas survived, and began the journey to Metropolis in the hopes of repairing his lost love.[22]

The Skylark attack Green Arrow

Swamped by work that had backed up for months, Oliver contemplated giving up his civilian life in favour of being Green Arrow full time. He was surprised to be attacked by three young women in his office who, once apprehended, claimed to be big fans of his. The three of them all went by the name "Skylark", rather than individual names. Highly attracted to them, Oliver was compelled to use the company's private jet to fly them all back to Canada with him to see their lab, where they and their father Leer had been genetically combining insects and animals with metal. Once landing there, though, the girls attacked him again, and caused his jet to crash, creating the illusion that Oliver Queen had died. Naomi was forced to pretend the jet had been stolen in order to prevent Emerson from seizing the company.[23]

Though Oliver escaped Skylark, he was attacked by genetically modified wolves. He refused to kill them, and that refusal saw one of the Skylark returning to explain that the attack had been a test by her father, who had thus been convinced that he was a good man. As they returned, she explained that pollution had caused a hole in the Earth called the Deadzone, and her father had gone mad while trying to genetically modify animals to survive it. Investigating her father's experiments, the pair were attacked by him once he learned that Oliver did not approve of them. After a fight with a genetically modified polar bear, they escaped.

Meanwhile, Emerson leaked news of Oliver's death to the press, as Naomi and Jax put forward a plan to use Robert Queen's will against him. They had learned that if anyone intended harm toward Oliver, all of Emerson's control over the company would be forfeit - but only if Oliver was really alive. Fortunately, they managed to track him to the Arctic.[24]

Oliver learned that the Skylark could not survive when separated from each other, and the sister he had grown to trust had grown ill. They discovered a village of miners who had their claims overtaken by Leer, and their river filled with cyanide. During some downtime, one of Oliver's companion's triplet sisters secretly takes her place, but left by morning. The replaced sister followed Oliver into the mines with some borrowed dynamite, unaware that her evil sister had drawn Oliver a map. When they arrived in a trap, and Leer claimed that she had betrayed Oliver (despite her having no memory of it), Oliver believed him, thanks to all of the previous deceptions. Meanwhile, the dynamite blew, burying all of Leer's labs under an avalanche. With Oliver's trust lost, the one good sister decided to stay with her doomed family, as Oliver was saved by Naomi in a helicopter.[25]

After returning to Seattle, Oliver foiled a plan by a man called Dr. Cognate to sell brainwashed humans as robotic slaves.[26] Despite feeling his company slipping from his grasp, Oliver put a stop to a pair of archers called the Dark Arrows, who were acting on behalf of the Occupy movement. In the meantime, Jax and Naomi had grown tired of Oliver's decline, and planned to quit working for him as Green Arrow. The loss of Q-Core to Emerson caused the majority stock to be sold off to a Chinese businessman named Jin Fang, who offered to sell it back to Oliver in exchange for some controversial facial-recognition software that would make him a surveillance superpower - with questionable ethics.[27]

Due to tense international relations with China, Oliver's visit there provided him with numerous difficulties - not the least of which his disinterest in giving up his technology to a man like Jin Fang.[28] Allying with a Chinese agent named Suzie Ming, Oliver found himself in a battle with ghosts of Jin Fang's ancestors. Though they made it out alive, Oliver still had to decide whether to give up his facial-recognition tech. Ultimately, he decided to do so, but with a modification that allowed Suzie Ming to keep her own eyes on Jin Fang's activities.[29]

Harrow

Back in Seattle again, Oliver had an encounter with Hawkman, resulting in a tentative alliance.[30] Afterwards, he dumped a weapons shipment into the harbour, angering Harrow, the man who bought them, enough to put a $50,000 hit on Green Arrow's head. Using the bounty to his advantage, Oliver drew out an assassin and beat an address out of him, learning of a dog-fighting ring owned by Harrow. After breaking into it, Harrow was so enraged that he doubled the bounty as he was carried away by police.[31]

Later, Harrow's girlfriend revealed that there was a warehouse full of explosives, with which Harrow's mutinous thug Pike intended to blow up both himself and the stash during the Sea Day Parade. They arrived in time to convince Pike to stop, but Harrow had already escaped jail and arrived on the scene. The struggle on the roof caught the authorities' attention, and Oliver hooked Harrow and his girlfriend to a police chopper's rescue cable. Pike, unfortunately, accidentally activated the detonator, giving Oliver just thirty seconds to save both of their lives. The explosion that followed was mistaken for a fireworks display by parade-goers.[32]

The Kill Machine

Some time later, Oliver learned via the newspaper that Emerson had sold Queen Industries to a rival called Stellmoor Industries. When confronted, Emerson explained that he lost Queen Industries because he was too focused on keeping Oliver on track with Q-Core. He explained that Oliver had never been ready to accept the Queen legacy. Before Oliver could question that, one of his own arrows crashed through the window, and killed Emerson. A line attached to the arrow yanked Emerson's body out, and down onto the street, attracting the authorities' attention, and placing blame for the crime on Oliver. Hoping to escape to Q-Core to regroup with Naomi and Jax, Oliver was horrified to see the building explode with his friends inside, just after receiving a cryptic message suggesting that they had been forced to do something. Frightened, Oliver suited up in one of his safe-houses, and emerged to find himself at the mercy of a superior bowman calling himself Komodo, who claimed that Oliver had squandered his destiny. Oliver's life was saved at the last by a stranger called Magus, who claimed that Oliver was never supposed to have left the island he was stranded on.[33]

In order not to be found, Oliver hid in a shipping container, and woke to find a note from Magus urging him to go to the Black Mesa in Arizona. Meanwhile, Oliver begged Steve Trevor and the JLA to keep the heat off of him for 48 hours, to clear his own name. For help, Oliver sought out an ex-employee named Henry Fyff who was fired for stalking Naomi. Together, they returned to Queen Industries, where Oliver snuck into Emerson's office and discovered a secret room. In it, he discovered a photo showing his father with Emerson and another man on the beach of the island on which he was stranded for a year. Magus appeared, warning Oliver to go to Black Mesa for answers, before Komodo killed him, and offered a cryptic hint about something called the Outsiders. It was too late for Oliver to leave, though, as the police soon arrived. He attempted to rappel out through the still broken window, but Komodo cut the line, and he found himself plummeting to the ground.[34]

Though he survived the fall, the run-in with the police at the office made Green Arrow a wanted man. Unbeknownst to Oliver, Naomi had been kept alive, watched by Komodo's young but cruel daughter Emiko. She was forced to watch as Komodo caught up to Oliver and beat him within an inch of his life, while he admitted that it was he who murdered Robert Queen. Despite his weakness, Oliver managed to regain the upper-hand, until Emiko herself appeared, and saved her father with her own archery skills. As they escaped, Oliver passed out from the pain and blood loss of being pierced by several arrows, leaving Henry to rescue him.[35]

Komodo belonged to a group called the Arrow Clan, and his superiors were angered to learn that Oliver Queen still lived, warning him to complete his task, or return to Prague. Meanwhile, Henry discovered from the Q-Core feed that Naomi was still alive, and woke Oliver to tell him. Following the clues, Oliver determined that she was being held at the Queen Family Mausoleum, and set out, despite the fact that his wounds hadn't healed. When he found her, she had been rigged with explosives, and he left Henry to defuse them while he chased down Komodo. In their fight, Oliver thrust an arrow into Komodo's eye, but before he could unmask him, he threw a smoke-bomb and escaped. Naomi, freed of the explosives, insisted that she help Green Arrow as vengeance.

Finally heeding Magus' advice, Oliver travelled to Black Mesa, where he was stopped on the highway by a sheriff, and knocked unconscious. He woke in the desert with nothing to his name and nothing to survive on.[36] After days of starvation and wandering, Oliver finally discovered Magus' tent. The man offered answers in the form of a hallucinogenic, giving Oliver visions of the past. His father had been obsessed with finding the home of the Arrow Clan, and had brought Emerson and his friend Simon Lacroix on a journey to find it. His obsession had left his company and family floundering, and bothered Emerson greatly.

Magus appeared to Oliver in the hallucination, explaining that the Arrow Clan was just one of several clans from which the leaders were chosen to become members of an elite circle called the Outsiders. Each clan had a totemic weapon, and each leader wielded that weapon, which was said to imbue true enlightenment. Simon Lacroix had learned of this, and killed Oliver's father in order to make himself the leader of the Arrow Clan, following Oliver's own failure to follow in his father's footsteps. In fact, it had been Emerson who arranged to send Oliver to the island with nothing but a bow in order to force him to be ready for Komodo's eventual challenge.

After coming down, Oliver met with a man called John Butcher, who was leader of the Axe Clan. Magus warned that the pair would have to trust each other if they intended to bring down the Outsiders. In accordance with a vision of a three-headed dragon that Oliver saw, Magus advised him to seek out the second dragon in the eastern European country of Vlatava. With this in mind, Oliver returned to Seattle, giving up any hope of running Queen Industries, and deciding to fight against corporations as a street-level vigilante.[37]

Green Arrow and Shado

Following Magus' advice, Oliver travelled to Vlatava, where the second dragon was supposed to be. He and his friends assumed that the dragon would likely be connected in some way to the international criminal and ruler of the country; a man called Werner Zytle. After breaking into Zytle's compound, Oliver discovered a woman imprisoned in the basement. When she saw him, she initially mistook him for his father Robert, but soon realized that he must be his son. Their escape attempt was thwarted by Zytle, who had christened himself Count Vertigo. He seemed to be using electromagnetic energy to disorient them and alter their perception of balance. Thanks to some inventiveness by Henry Fyff, Oliver's quiver was used to detonate an EMP blast, to nullify the effects of Vertigo's power. Rather than fight him, the woman and Oliver escaped. Afterwards, the woman introduced herself as Shado and revealed that she was the mother of Komodo's ward Emiko, who was in fact Robert Queen's daughter, and therefore, Oliver's half-sister.[38]

Outbreak

Oliver encountered the deadly assassin, Deathstroke, during his hunt to find Doctor Miracle, a man whose blood could heal anything. Oliver ran into Slade when he arrived in Africa to retrieve Doctor Miracle, where Deathstroke was attempting to do the same. The two engaged in a fight that Deathstroke ultimately won. Deathstroke then impaled Oliver with his sword, seemingly killing him, although Oliver survived due to Slade being unaware that the blade had some of Doctor Miracle's blood on it.[39]

Fall of the Emerald Archer

At some point, Oliver slept with Diggle's ex-fiance, and the resulting tension caused Diggle to once again leave Team Arrow. He also began wearing a new, modified costume, storing the old one in the old Arrow-Cave alongside various other former uniforms and memorabilia.[40] Oliver and Black Canary started to investigate an underground group that were trafficking the Seattle homeless population in a Queen Industries shipping containment.[41] After seeking advice of an old business partner, Cyrus Broderick, Oliver was attacked on his home by Shado and later Emiko, who shoot multiple arrows at him.[42] He was then thrown into the ocean and believed to be dead by the world at large while also having been framed for murder. In reality, Oliver survived and arrived at Puget Sound, where he used Emiko's beacon to send a signal to Henry Fyff, who rescued him. Returning to his city, he saw how his home was destroyed and lost all his money due to his current status. Oliver then returned to the old Doomsday Cellar that he built in the Rainier Wilderness to form a plan against Cyrus Broderick, who took over his company.[43]

Deep Target

Aquaman Green Arrow Deep Target Vol 1 1 Textless

"Aquaman" and "Green Arrow"

A construction worker named Alex Santos was killed in an accident while illegally working after hours on a building site in Seattle, leaving behind a wife and three children. Alex and his coworkers had been paid under the table to work after hours as the project was behind schedule. Hoping to bring the people responsible for Alex's death to justice, Oliver broke into the office of the CEO of the company Alex worked for. The man revealed that the company was a front for Scorpio and Oliver's investigation lead him to a small building in Star City. Oliver broke into the building and found himself in a seemingly infinite hallway. He met his teammate Aquaman in the hallway as they fought off henchmen, and they realised that the infinite hallway was an illusion. Arthur stole a pair of goggles from a henchman which allowed him to see the building as it truly was. He spotted a door and the two went through it, finding a laboratory seemingly with a group of hostages bound in the centre. Oliver rushed over to save them but Arthur could not hear the hostages and realised they were an illusion. When Oliver reached the hostages the hologram deactivated, revealing that they were standing on a high-tech platform. Arthur tried to tackle Oliver off the platform, while at the same time he shot out the platform's main projector. It was in fact a time travel platform developed by Scorpio, and the resulting accident caused the two men to switch lives and histories.[44]

Oliver awoke to find that he now possessed Arthur's powers and he was recognised by everyone as "Oliver Curry", the Aquaman and King of Atlantis. He correctly assumed that Arthur must now be living his life and took to spending nights in a drained throne room waiting for him to arrive. Eventually Arthur did come to Atlantis but he mistakenly believed that Oliver was responsible for what happened and attacked him, despite Ollie's attempts to talk to him. Arthur was armed with trick arrows designed to exploit Ollie's new weaknesses and put up a good fight, but eventually Oliver overpowered him. Once he was able to get Arthur to calm down and listen, he convinced him that he had not intentionally stolen his life and the two teamed up to find out what had happened.[1] They planned to go to S.T.A.R. Labs in Arthur's jet, but one of the pilots was a Scorpio agent who redirected them to a remote island where they were attacked by General Anderton, the leader of Scorpio's time travel project.[45] Anderton overpowered them and took them to Scorpio's base on the moon where he tortured them for information, trying to determine exactly how the accident had occured. During the interrogation, Arthur realistically faked his death using a technique Oliver had learned in Nanda Parbat and which he now remembered. When Scorpio medics untied him to check him over, he escaped and freed Oliver. They fought their way out, only to find that the facility was on the moon.[44]

The two fought their way to the base's hanger and stole a rocket to escape back to Earth. Scorpio sattelites fired on the rocket and forced them to crashland in the Atlantic Ocean. Arthur almost drowned and they were attacked by a school of predatory fish, but Oliver was able to use his telepathy to get the fish to leave them alone and carry Arthur to the surface. Oliver swam to Amnesty Bay, only to find it inhabited by humanoid dinosaurs. When Arthur woke up they were attacked by dinosaur police officers and rescued by General Anderton.[46] Anderton explained that when they escaped he had activated the "Tabula Rasa protocol", whereby Scorio operatives would be sent into the preshistoric past to allow Scorpio to control history from the very beginning. Safeguards intended to ensure that operatives landed safely failed and many were killed instantly, the few survivors were fused with dinsoaurs in the same way General Anderton was. This altered the timeline to such an extent that dinosaurs survived into the 21st Century and sentient, humanoid dinosaurs were Earth's dominant life form. As Anderton, Oliver and Arthur had previously been through the time platforms, they were unaffected by the changes to the timeline.

Anderton believed they could return to the original timeline by travelling back to the earliest point in time Scorpio had ever visited, marked by a device called a "time stamp", before any of the operatives arrived, and from there jump into the beam of Scorpio's first ever time travel experiment. The three of them constructed a working time machine and returned to the original timeline at a point two years in the past. As a side effect, Oliver became Green Arrow again.[47]

The three of them managed to destroy Scorpio's prototype time machine and capture the technicians, but General Anderton's younger self got away. The future version of Anderton chased after him, and Aquaman followed them both, assuming that Anderton was planning to betray them. Oliver called the Martian Manhunter and asked him to join them, the followed Arthur and the Andertons. The younger Anderton had fled to a lake, where a liopleurodon was somehow living. This, along with the fact that Anderton had not reverted to human form indicated that the timeline had still been altered. The older Anderton claimed to not know what had happened but Arthur and Oliver did not believe him. Arthur had the liopleurodon drag the future version of Anderton into the lake and while he was underwater, Oliver captured and hid the human version of Anderton, replacing him with J'onn. Arthur and Oliver handed the Scorpio technicians and the future Anderton over to the authorities, while J'onn went on the prison transport disguised as the younger Anderton to scan their minds.

Oliver asked Arthur to search his memories for anomalies. Arthur claimed that everything was the way it should be and that he needed to get back to Atlantis immediately. Oliver was a little suspicious but not worried, giving Arthur a communicator so they could stay in touch. He took the human version of Anderton to prison personally, and J'onn told him that the future Anderton was telling the truth and did not know why the timeline had not returned to normal. Oliver tried to call Arthur but he did not pick up.[48]

After five days of silence from Arthur, the younger version of General Anderton escaped from prison, killing the other incarcerated Scorpio agents except his older self who managed to get away. Anderton joined up with Oliver and told him that Scorpio had conducted other time travel experiments that most of the agents had not known about and that their plan had not undone. As such, Scorpio maintained control of the timeline and in order to completely undo their influence they would have to travel back again and sabotage Scorpio's network or time stamps before it was first brought online.

Three days later Oliver returned to Atlantis, demanding that Arthur explain himself, but was captured by the Atlantean Guard and imprisoned in The Aquarium, Atlantis' maximum security prison. Arthur visited Oliver in prison and apologised, but told him that he could not give up this new reality, where he, his mother and brother were a loving family. However, he reluctantly agreed when Oliver told him that the changes to the timeline had made the lives of many other worse, for example, in this timeline Alex Santos was not simply killed on a building site but fell asleep at the wheel and accidentally drove off the freeway, killing both himself and two of his children.

Arthur and Oliver headed for the moon in a spaceship flown by the older General Anderton, while Oliver took out the base's defences using laser cannons controlled by his bow. When they reached the moonbase they were attacked by the younger General Anderton, who had been given super-strength by drugs. Arthur fought the other Anderton while Arrow and the future version of Anderton went to the time travel laboratory. They built "time bands" to protect themselves from changes to the timeline and fought off a flock of dinosaurs that Scorpio had set to guard the lab. Anderton escaped into the past while Oliver went to take the band to Arthur.

The younger Anderton tried to kill them by deactivating the base's shielding and sending them into space, but Oliver was able to shoot the time band towards Arthur with an arrow just in time. The timeline returned to normal and they found themselves back in the Scorpio laboratory in Star City, having just jumped off the time platform. They went back to Atlantis and visited Atlanna's memorial together.[49]

Dark Crisis

Justice League Incarnate summoned the Justice League to aid them against the Great Darkness, which was attempting to invade the Multiverse. Oliver had already resigned from the League after they learned of his role in Checkmate, but came along to help Black Canary.

The assembled heroes went to the Darkness' entry point in the ruins of the pre-Crisis multiverse, and found Pariah modifying his Antimatter Chamber to allow the Darkness to cross into the Multiverse. Pariah summoned the Dark Army to stop them and, while the other heroes battled the cosmic villains, Oliver was able to hit the chamber with an explosive arrow. The Dark Army disappeared but before he vanished Doomsday smashed Oliver.[50]

Oliver was critically injured and on the brink of death. Pariah sent the heroes into pocket universes designed to be personal paradise worlds for each of them. Their memories were rewritten to reflect their new reality, but Oliver subconsciously remembered Black Canary and kept escaping the worlds Pariah created for him to find her. After Oliver destroyed multiple worlds Pariah considered simply letting him die, but Black Canary begged him to create a world for them both, promising that if they were together they would accept whatever he gave them.[51]

Barry Allen and Hal Jordan managed to enter the paradise worlds, and with their help the Justice League were able to escape. They confronted Pariah, but he teleported away to Earth 0, warning them that their survival was tied to the paradise worlds, and they would cease to exist if they followed him.[52] Despite this, and Black Canary's warning that he was in particular personal danger, Oliver told the League that the world needed them and encouraged them to take the risk. Hal and Barry were able to combine their powers to teleport the League back to Earth 0 and into the fight against the Dark Army at the Hall of Justice, but Oliver did not appear with the others.[53]

Abilities

  • Archery: First and foremost of Oliver's abilities is his prowess with a bow and arrow. Since his teenage years, Oliver had a natural skill in archery.[54] During his time on the island, Oliver became highly proficient with a bow, and later trained under Merlyn for a period of time, further mastering his skills.[55] He can use anything from the most simple bows, to complicated composite bows and trick arrows with full efficiency. He has even shown skill using a bow made of alien technology.[56] Oliver's aim is so great that he is able to ricochet arrows multiple times to take out groups of opponents.[42] With the aid of Green Lantern, Oliver was able to snipe an assassin on the moon, using a bow construct.[57] Oliver has fought opponents that normally couldn't be hurt with arrows, yet his skill allowed him to persevere.[58][59]

  • Peak Human Condition: As a result of his rigorous training over the years, Oliver is at the upper end of natural human abilities. He uses a bow with a 150-pound draw weight, which has built up his strength over time.[70] Wildcat took notice of this during a boxing session with Oliver.[56] While enraged he has been able to overpower the superhuman Brick and almost beat him to death[71] and slam Richard Dragon against a concrete column with enough strength to crack it.[72] While riding his motorcycle, Oliver was strong enough to use the forward momentum to flip it and hurl the bike at an enemy.[62]
  • Pedagogy[68]
  • Stealth
  • Surveillance: Oliver is a keen observer, as he was capable of noticing that he was being followed by a sniper, who was hidden hundreds of feet away.[73]
