The Great Darkness, also known as the The Great Beast, is a primordial cosmic entity who has existed since the beginning of time alongside God/The Presence. On Earth, it appears in the form of an engulfing blanket of thick smoke, and its "right hand" in the Multiverse is known as The Empty Hand. The Darkness is the true source and embodiment of all darkness in the reality, who was awakened by the Brujería during the Crisis on Infinite Earths. Over the years, the Darkness created several avatars and puppets to weaken the new universe and extinguish the Light, such as Mister Mind, Gog, Extant, Monitor Dax Novu, and Superboy-Prime. It also created the being known as "Jane Smith" and made her inhabit The Dark Garden in the Overvoid.
The Darkness was adapted by Alan Moore and Stan Woch, first appearing in Swamp Thing (Volume 2) #49 (1986).
