Dr. Darlene Irons is the sister of John Henry Irons.

John and Darlene were very close as children, and were nicknamed the "Wonder Twins". When they grew up they both followed in their father's footsteps and joined the United States Army. After they got out of the military Darlene became a doctor, but John became increasingly distant and paranoid. Their father heard rumours from an old army friend that he was involved in illegal weapons trafficking and John cut himself off from his family when their father confronted him rather than deny it, saying that they would be safer without him. Six months later, he was murdered and the case was never solved.[1]

Years later, Lois Lane reached out to Darlene as she was investigating John's death. Darlene refused to speak to her and so Lois made an appointment with her clinic under the alias "Ginger Metcalfe", to try and meet her in person. Dr Irons still refused to discuss John's death, but told Lois that the symptoms she reported when she made the appointment suggested she may be pregnant.[2]

Lois's pregnancy test came back negative and so Darlene sent her in for further tests. Lois was unable to give a full family history due to being estranged from her mother since childhood, and on a hunch Darlene had her tested for a rare form of breast cancer, which came back positive.[3]

Later, a man identical to her brother stopped her in the street. He told her that he was her brother's counterpart from another universe and was looking for information about his death. At first she refused to speak to him, but after he told her he had a daughter and needed to know what had happened to his counterpart to protect her, she told him what she knew. She asked him not to contact her again as it was too difficult to be around him and ran off.

As soon as she was out of John's sight, she was abducted by men working for Intergang, who took her to a parking garage and strapped her to a bomb her brother had built to use as leverage against the other John Henry. However, John was able to reach her and disarm the bomb in time.[1] John Henry went to New Orleans and installed security measures to protect the extended Irons family from Intergang.

When he returned, he went to visit Darlene again. He told her that his daughter Natalie had started dating and she was having dinner with her boyfriend's family at a restaurant called Little Ace's in Hob's Bay. Darlene told him that Little Ace's was an Intergang hangout which her brother used to go to with Bruno Mannheim and he ran there to pull her out.[4]
