David Hersch was supposed to be a supervillain on Earth-1. Because of Nora West-Allen's interference with time in order to help his father defeat the Thinker during the Enlightenment, Hersch was not hit by the dark matter so his future changed.

Original Timeline

In the original timeline, David Hersch became the supervillain known as Cicada. He was one of The Flash's most dangerous villains and, according to Eobard Thawne, the only one that Barry never captured.[1]

Altered Timeline

David Hersch was a criminal who participated in various terrorist acts in the past. In 2018, he was in Central City where he witnessed the Enlightenment and the Flash's attempt to stop the Thinker's satellite from hurting people.

Hersch was supposed to be hit by a shrapnel from the satellite after it was destroyed by the Flash, being imbued with powers that would have turned him into Cicada. Due to XS' return from the future and her help in destroying the satellite,[2] the trajectory of the shrapnel changed so it did not hit Hersch anymore: his destiny changed as Orlin Dwayer had now become Cicada.

Months later, Sherloque Wells deduced Hersch' secret identity as Cicada like his other dopplegangers from the Multiverse. The Flash and XS broke into Hersch's hideout to capture him but they discovered that he was not the villain they were looking for; however, Hersch was arrested for his past crimes.[3]

  • His future self was, along with his original self, one of the most powerful villains in the Multiverse.
  • According to Sherloque Wells, David Hersch becoming Cicada is a constant in the Multiverse and the arrest of his dopplegangers increased Wells' reputation as the greatest detective of the Multiverse.
