David Kim is a cybernetically enhanced scientist who, after surviving an attempt on his life, was infused with experimental nanotechnology which gave him extraordinary abilities.

Origins

Dr. David Kim and his fiancee Kelly Vu were two scientists hoping to cure all illnesses in the world, to this purpose they met Dr. Marius Chung of Healerist to obtain financial support to further develop their revolutionary nanobots, but while the man was interested he was dubious about the fact that the technology to work needed to be connected to people's brains so he offered to buy their research for one billion dollars, which they refused.

Returned home in the night David woke up and found a scary looking being in their lab with a bomb strapped to his body, the monster blew himself up as soon as he was discovered and David was caught in the blast, Kelly arrived soon after and found David horribly burned, she ordered the escaped bots to help him but they unexpectedly turned on her and consumed her body to heal David.

David later woke up in the hospital where they told him that Kelly had died, distraught he left the hospital and in a fit of rage stabbed his hand with his keys and discovered that the nanobots had now bonded to his body. He wandered for a while until he was approached by creatures like the one that had tried to kill him and after taking them away from a park full of children confronted them just to be quickly overpowered but instead of dying the bots consumed two of the monsters and created a white and golden form fitting suit for him.[1]

David then wondering to whom belonged a voice that kept screaming in his head was surprised to discover that it was actually Kelly, who had survived the night before as the bots had transferred her consciousness into him and was now afraid to fade away without help.[1]

Search for the Truth and the Immutables

Overwhelmed by the discovery of Kelly's survival and condition he ran away while Kelly tried to calm him and explain to him what had happened, paying no attention to his surrounding he fell of a cliff and into water just to find out that he could now breathe under water and fly. After flying away and while trying to find out more about Kelly's condition he was attacked by flying robots, Kelly suggested to him to fly up and then crash down to free himself of the robots which he did and then left to attend Kelly's funeral, as she was believed to be dead.

Detective Truco approached him again at the funeral to offer her condolence and flirted with him, after asking him to meet later he accepted after Kelly told him that she could provide informations but left soon after as the detective was just looking for informations herself.[2]

Scared after Kelly failed to answer him he bit his own hand to bring her back throu pain thanks to their link and visited their collegue Henry to seek help in order to rebuild the nanobots controller but after discussing about consciousness transfer Henry suggested that instead of moving a mind between two bodies one could simple move a mind to an android as he was working on a android from Tinker Technologies, David suggested the option to Kelly who firmly refused and discovered that in anger she could influence David's movement, afraid to lose herself she begged David to give up control of his body and he agreed. But soon after taking control of the body Kelly rashly decided to go after Dr Chung as she believed him to be responsible for her condition, she flew to his office and phased through his window to find him in the company of several men who displayed similar abilities to David.

After a tense confrontation with the sword-wielding Morien, Dr. Chung asked her to accompany him to a door in a cloud wich led to a room full of beings like him, the Immutables, immortals born with eternally regenerating cells who had kept humanity from stumbling upon the secret of immortality, Chung asked Gudrun to show David what would happen if their research was given to the world and showed them a dying world, saying that it would be all that would be left in a generation and asked him if there was a way to work together.

While Kelly believed him and was tempted to listen to him, David vehemently disagreed as Chung and his companions where murderers but they were interrupted as a squadron of Tinker Technologies android attacked Chung and asked David to leave with them.[3]

While Kelly wanted to side with the Immutables David wanted to know what the droids wanted and managed to wrestle from Kelly enough control to stop his body, Dr. Emris Tinker controlling the droids from afar introduced himself and explained that he wanted to protect the world from the Immutables and asked David to join him, while David and Kelly fought over control. Tinker had his robot attack them, causing Kelly to take back control but while she sided with the Immutables Morien attacked her from behind and stabbed her through the chest with his vibrosword, she passed out and the Immutable escaped.

David later woke up in Tinker's lab, bound to an examination table and with Moren's sword still in their back, Tinker renewed his offer and after Kelly took back control offered them a robotic with Kelly's likeness but she angrily refused, David urged her to accept the offer and even offered to leave her the body and move his consciousness into the android but Kelly denied his request, saying that she did not trust him and that David was surrendering too easily. David kept trying to convince her while noticing that she was becoming unstable but she took control once again and David faded away, Kelly freed herself and was attacked by a group of android armed with blades like Moren's as Tinker said that he would still take the nanobots away from them, causing Kelly to lash out, heal and infect the droids with her nanobots, taking control of them.[4]

Now in control of Tinker Tech. androids, Kelly immediately set about to do some good in the world. In an internal dialogue between the two, she conversed with David about how they were finally gonna change the world. Even as his steadily deteriorating psyche was further degrading with her in charge. Initially being reunited with Detective Truco outside of the Tinker Technologies building, who so happened to be coming in to speak with the company owner before seeing Dr. Kim floating out of its main entrance. Duo converses with the constable for a time until they are met with hostility by local law enforcement tailing behind her. While making no threatening moves, the SWAT Team assaults Kelly with small arms fire, but she easily perry's their attack by disintegrating their munitions with her nanites.

Kelly soon makes her way to the transient's local in order to make good on her promise. Meeting back up with the same homeless person she and her husband met way back in the beginning. While in control of Kim's body and the nanites, she sets about healing and mending the sick and the desperate. All of whom come flocking to her in droves. Kim's consciousness is still troubled by Kelly's actions, saying they've still never properly tested their innovation before probing such a grand undertaking. But Kelly reassures him that she knows what all she's doing, despite the potential risks of applying their shared physiology in such a manner. While there were a few subjects their nanotech couldn't help, Kelly reassured those gathered around her that they all would take this one step at a time in order to figure out a means of helping their ailments. It was not long after when Dr. Emris assaulted Duo in the middle of the crowd with a high-tech cannon, Maya ended up being a casualty of his onslaught as Kelly was dismayed at her critical injury.

They are soon attacked by Chung and his Immutables, the former ordering Ambrus to open a portal to where other immortals were left to rot for their failures. But Kelly impales them all with her claws before grabbing Maya Truco 's body before it can get sucked into the void. As they come to realize how their friction had caused all their problems, David and Kelly come to the consensus that they both screwed up and should've worked together like they intended to. Just as Dr. Tinker swoops in to throw all the Immutables into the rift alongside David. But then, they are met by an opposing force; former immortals whom their brethren thought cast aside forever, The Irredeemables.[5]

Abilities

Weaknesses

  • Shared Body: Because his fiancée now inhabits his brain as a second consciousness they sometimes struggle for dominance over his body.
  • Mental Disorder: The union of minds causes some psychological imbalances.
  • Power Instability: Even with the curative abilities of the nanite appliance, Duo cannot (yet) amend more serious diseases such as cancer.
