Death came for those whose time on the mortal world has run out.
History
He once came for the terminally ill Sally Cornwelles, but instead found himself captured by Jack Horner using a magic sack that sucked him into it's depths. Without Death, nothing would die even if fatally wounded. After realizing this, Jack let Death out of the sack so he could continue his work of leading the dead to their eternal rest. Death wasn't angry about his entrapment, in fact, asking Jack to let him take a vacation in his sack once every year or so.
