Death of the New Gods (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 2008.
Synopsis for "Bearing Witness"
On New Genesis, Superman, Orion, and Mister Miracle arrive at the residence of the Forever People to confront them but find they have been dead for weeks and were killed in the same manner as the other New Gods. Even their Motherbox is dead.
Elsewhere, Kalibak approaches Mantis to create an alliance to kill Scott Free.
In space, Metron reflects that the God Killer, as he is now calling the murder, never showed animosity to the New Gods and never possessed the power to rend souls from beings. He decides to travel in time to observe the first murders and learn more.
Back at the residence of the Forever People, Superman, Orion, and Mister Miracle look for answers. Scott uses the Anti-Life Equation to raise the Forever People as zombie-like creatures asking them the identity of the God Killer, but they defy him giving only cryptic responses like telling them it will be the last person they expect. Ultimately, they choose to be disintegrated rather than reveal the identity of the killer. Later, Superman intimates to Orion that he believes Scott is losing his grip on sanity
In the past on Earth, Metron visits the place where Black Racer was killed and tracks the God Killer’s journey back through time and space. He learns that the killer’s journey began in the Bleed and he gained his newfound power to rend souls in the distant past. Metron decides he must find the killer’s benefactor.
On Apokolips, Desaad recounts the earlier failure of the Soul Fire Project, which was an attempt to gain control of the Equation by boosting the spiritual level of Earth human subjects to the point where the comprehension of the Equation would be possible through psychic means. However, the subjects all literally burst into flames within one hour of taking the serum. Darkseid asks for the serum sample and releases Desaad from his service.
On New Genesis, Orion and Superman have decided that, given their conversation with the Forever People and the fact that Lightray muttered “infinity” before dying, the God Killer may be Infinity Man. They search for him in Supertown but only find the desperation of the populace. Soon, Superman is summoned to Himon’s lab where Himon and Gideon tell him that Himon found a strange energy source on Takion’s body. He has isolated it as Astro Force, which Orion commands. Scott appears and rejects that Orion could be the killer. Superman attempts to communicate with the Justice League of America, but he and Himon find that communications from New Genesis are being blocked somehow. Elsewhere, Mantis and Kalibak are leading Mantis’ forces in an attack on Supertown. Admist the invasion, they confront Scott Free, managing to knock him out.
In the distant past of an unknown planet, Metron finally locates the benefactor of the Infinity Man and it is revealed to be the Source itself.
