The Democratic Party is one of the two main political groups in the United States, opposite the Republican Party. Democratic ideals are traditionally liberal, usually identifying with American left wing politics.

History

Formation

The Democratic party was officially founded in 1828 in support of Andrew Jackson, with their main ideal being opposition to the formation of the national bank. They were primarily based in the American South and in the 19th Century, deriving a lot of their support from the pro-slavery base and conservatives. The party itself however was split on the issue, with factions both supporting and opposing slavery.

After the war, it capitalized on Southern resentment against the Union over issues like corruption and white supremacy. However, the party underwent a major political shift during the 20th Century as it switched demographics with its main rival the Republican Party and sought more politically liberal goals. After the start of the Great Depression, it maintained a stranglehold on American politics till 1950s, especially due to Franklin D. Roosevelt, while also confronting the Nazi and Communist threat. President John F. Kennedy in 1960s prioritized equal rights for African-Americans, which was accomplished by his successor Lyndon B. Johnson.

New Earth

In 2008, the Democratic presidential candidates were Davis Brewster[1] and Martin Suarez.[2] The political race became especially heated when Green Arrow publicly endorsed Davis Brewster, prompting many other heroes to discuss their political opinions. The election was won by Martin Suarez, who became the next president. [3]

Watchmen

Adrian Veidt, having been so smart, successfully predicted that actor Robert Redford would be elected president in 1992 almost 7 years in advance. [4] On November 1, 1985, on the night before Veidt would unleash a fake interdimensional squid on New York City in a conspiracy plot he knew would end the Cold War, he recorded a congratulatory video to President Redford to be played on his inauguration seven years later. [5]

In the late 80s and early 90s, as Veidt made moves to make his prediction come true, he became the Democratic party's largest contributor. [6]

As predicted, Redford was elected but, upon seeing the video from Veidt, rebuked the claim that he was indebted to Veidt's years of political posturing.
