Deric Hayes is a professor of a robotics club of students in robotic engineering and the best friend of Victor Stone.

Early Life

During his youth, Deric Hayes became good friends with Calvin, Marcus and especially Victor Stone, with whom he forged a close friendship, forming the "Detroiticons" with his other friends, creating various inventions and being laser tag champions on Pizzatron-3000. Deric and Victor created Mister Invincible together as part of a project, taking an entire early morning to create. In 2014, Deric and his friends learned of the death of Victor's mother, Elinore Stone, as well as the presumed death of his best friend, and carried Eleanor's coffin at her funeral.

Years later, Deric and his friends found out that Victor survived, now turned into the cybernetic superhero Cyborg, becoming disappointed in him for never coming back to find them, frustrated that he never regained their friendship. Upon graduation, Deric became a robotics professor, teaching several exceptional students, receiving help from Calvin and Marcus. Deric continues his life, marrying a woman and having a family with his children.[3][2]

Reunion with friends

In 2022, Deric received a message from Victor, who was looking to reconcile with him, a request that Deric accepted, arranging a meeting the next Friday. During their meeting at Pizzatron-3000, Deric, Calvin, and Marcus felt uncomfortable talking to Victor, who had disarmed his robotic parts to get a second chance, and recounted various anecdotes about his adventures with the Doom Patrol, a strange team of superheroes in which Vic is a part of. Deric and his friends decided to have fun, playing lasertag like old times, however Deric got into a fight with Victor, revealing his frustration for never looking for them after the incident, causing them to lose the game and their friendship. Before leaving, Deric gave Victor the Mister Invincible, leaving his former friend behind.[3]

Days later, Deric received a visit from Victor, who was turned into a boy by a spell of youth until Victor's friend and sorcerer Willoughby Kipling reversed the spell. Deric took Victor back to the Doom Manor, where they saw a portal and discovered that Larry Trainor, Victor's radioactive teammate, had been kidnapped by the ferocious Scissormen, so Victor decided to save Larry, but Deric decided to help Victor. because he had no powers, entering the kingdom of Orqwith together.[4][1]

Friends Again

During his rescue mission, Deric continued his fight with Victor for believing that he was not worthy, stating that the reason why he went looking for him when he became young, was because he trusted him, mentioning that he would always be his friend no matter what. that, telling him that he told his students that he was a friend of Cyborg, telling Victor that he was proud to say so. Following their talk, Deric and Victor mended their friendship, joining forces to create a giant Mister Invincible to fight the Scissormen, allowing them to enter the Sacrarium to rescue Larry from captivity, though the robot was destroyed and both were captured.[1]

Battling the Scissormen

Captured by the Scissormen, Deric and Vic managed to escape, helping to free Jane, an aggressive and intense woman with 64 different personalities, and Cliff Steele, an aggressive and mocking robot, both being Vic's teammates, with whom they planned to escape from Orqwith, with Deric and Vic searching for Larry, and Jane and Cliff searching for Jane's stolen longevity. The two friends used Orqwith's papers to create weaponry against the Scissormen, with Deric using Cyborg's old sonic cannon to fight, learning how to use it with the mentoring of Vic, who spoke of his reasons for leaving his hero life behind and they managed to rescue Larry, witnessing the destruction of Orqwith by the all-powerful deity, Immortus. Upon returning to Earth, Deric said goodbye to Vic to return to his family, suggesting that he could help him become a different version of the previous Cyborg.[5][2]
