Scar was an enemy of Robin during his time in New Carthage.
History
Desmond Mallard was once one of the most prominent students at Hudson University. He was often regarded as one of the most smart, wealthy, handsome and athletic men in the whole institution. He was dating Lori Elton until he suffered an accident while playing football when, during a tackle, his face was cut by a boot cleat. Feeling that his perfect face had become nothing but a hideous deformity, Mallard's mind snapped.
Mallard retreated from society and adopted the identity of "Scar" while wearing a truly grotesque mask. He started kidnapping attractive people and experimented on them, giving them malformations to take their beauty away and placing them as freaks in an amusement park.
Once he tried to contact his former girlfriend, Lori, but he learned that she was dating another man called Dick Grayson and "Scar" decided to take Lori's beauty. He lured Lori to Gotham City, where he took her to the amusement park and tied her to a table, where acid would pour into her face. Lori was rescued by the timely arrival of Batman, who after making sure that Lori was in the care of Robin, captured Mallard and snatched off his mask, forcing him to see his true face in the house of mirrors. This was too much for Mallard, who was still perfect except for a minor scratch, but in his mind it was all wrong.
