Synopsis for "The Beginning..."

With Gotham City rampant with looting and crime by those infected with the Joker's Virus, Lonnie Machin worriedly texts his mother in the hopes that she is still okay, somewhere. Attempting to escape the gunfire of a pair of infected cops, he ducks down an alley and finds himself yanked into a doorway to safety. His saviour introduces himself as Dax, but warns that they have to keep moving. They make their way to a private school with a security lock, but Dax can't get it open. Lonnie, though, has designed an app that allows him to hack the keypad and open it, getting them safely inside. Dax explains that he and his friends Dre and Riko have been hiding out in the gymnasium. He and Lonnie discover them fighting off a bunch of infected children, and Dax leaps down to help tie the kids' hands and subdue them. Dax introduces Lonnie, noting his interesting hacking skills, and Dre recognizes his work as that of Moneyspider - the hacker who broke into Wayne Industries.

Dax, Dre, and Riko have one more room to clear, so they can stay safe, and they leave Lonnie to wait for them. In the meantime, he one of the school's computers to locate his mother's phone, and notes that it's at the strip club where she works. So, he hacks the security cameras to see whether she's there. Fortunately, he spots her. By the time Dax and his friends get back, they discover that he's left to find her. They also notice that the club she works at is under attack by infected mob hitmen.

Lonnie hurries across rooftops, where he comes under attack by an infected janitor. In order to escape him, Lonnie attempts to leap the gap between two buildings and nearly falls into the alley. Fortunately, he is grabbed and saved by someone. Dax and his friends catch up in time to see his saviour go, and they peer over the edge of the roof to see Batwoman and a bunch of other Batman allies in the fray below. Lonnie admits that his mother is on the other side of the chaos below. Rico warns that they don't stand a chance against the mobsters attacking Lonnie's mom's club - and he doesn't stand a chance alone. Lonnie can't let his mother go, and tries zip-lining along a cable to the next building, but loses control, and Batwoman has to save him again. She warns that Lonnie and his friends can't stay in this place. It's too dangerous - but she can make a call to get them some help.

Soon. Spoiler arrives, explaining that all she needed to know was that he wanted to help his mother. She leads the teens down the abandoned Third Avenue subway line to get to the East Side Strip faster. After emerging, Lonnie points out the club, which is already mobbed by the infected trying to get inside. Spoiler passes out tranquilizer guns, warning that they only have four shots each, which they will have to use to get past the crowd, get in, get Lonnie's mother, and get out the back door. Before she can lead them into battle, though, Lonnie has an idea, running into the alley. Lonnie had spotted discarded Anarky Masks in the dumpster next to the building, when he'd checked the security cams earlier. He rushes over to the dumpster and retrieves them, suggesting that they spray-paint the Joker's grin onto them, and try to sneak past the infected with them. To their surprise, it works and the infected disperse when they see them.

Hurrying inside, Lonnie removes his mask and promises his mother that she'll be safe, turning to thank his new friends for their help. They respond that that is what friends are for.
