Synopsis for Batman: "The Joker's Millions"

The crime lord "King" Barlowe has died and left all of his fortune in money and jewels to his sworn enemy and rival, the Joker. Using his newfound fortune, the Joker actually retires from crime by changing his lifestyle, buying a gigantic mansion and becoming a frequent client of social clubs, living an ostentatious - though law-abiding - life of leisure. However, when the time comes for the Joker to pay the I.R.S. the mandatory taxes after gaining an inheritance, he realizes that Barlowe has gotten the last laugh after all from beyond the grave: almost all of the entire money and jewels that were left to him by Barlowe are counterfeit and phony, respectively, and he has no actual money to pay the taxes.

Rather than admit that he, of all people, has been bamboozled, the Joker is forced to take up crime once again to afford the amount of money that he has to pay in taxes. Not yet beaten, however, he hits upon the brilliant idea of commiting ordinary crimes such as stick-ups and safe crackings - decidedly un-Jokerish crimes - as secretly as possible in order to prevent any suspicion of Barlowe's trick on him, figuring that no one would ever suspect him of such pedestrian affairs. Despite all of his efforts in commiting ordinary crimes, however, there is always an unsuspected clue that pops up somewhere and points toward him as the mastermind behind them. The newspapers include every other crime on their headlines and they are always attributed to the Joker. Later, the Joker finally tells the truth to a crook named Duke Gorman and, not long after this, Batman confronts the Joker with a recorded confession, revealing that he had been posing as Gorman. The Joker tries to escape using one of the jewels before realizing that it is one of the phony ones. The Joker is finally captured and his millionaire charade comes to an end.
