Synopsis for Roy Raymond: "Prof. Wetzel's Mystery Ray!"

Roy Raymond poses as a professor on his own television program with a lamp that can supposedly alter objects' physical forms. When the cameras are off, he explains that it is a ruse to catch criminals who had stolen statues, the idea being that they will grab the lamp to change the statues into something inconspicuous so they can smuggle them out of town. The police placed a tracker into the base of the lamp to follow the criminals to their hideout. In reality, the lamp is just a heat lamp and the props were gimmicked to melt. The criminals show up at the studio and kidnap the disguised Roy and take the lamp, but leave the base to more easily fit it into their car. Back at their hideout, they see the ray is not working and one of the gang members slaps Roy, knocking his disguise off. Roy runs away, angling the lamp at the sprinklers as he does. Just before the criminals can kill him for tricking them, the firemen from the fire station next door burst through the door, because the heat lamp set off the sprinklers and the fire alarm.

Using his Martian powers without being detected, J'onn J'onzz frustrates all of Benson's crime attempts until he finally learns, from Benson's half-conscious mumblings, that he has been hired by gangster Sam Spooner to get into jail so that he can kill the witness in prison who is to testify against Spooner.
