The philosophy of Mirror House is quite simple. We believe, wholeheartedly, that evil is humanity's divine spark. See, some people think that what makes us as a species divine, what separates us from soulless animals is our propensity for good. And yet, if I may, I'd like to propose another theory. A retort, if you will... because goodness... compassion, generosity. These are things that do, in fact, occur in the wild, between lower forms of life. But evil... true malevolence, though... no. No, that you don't see among the birds and the bees and the monkeys in the trees. And so it is in evil, our capacity for utter wickedness, that will see our true, divine selves reflected most clearly.
Detective Comics #872 is an issue of the series Detective Comics (Volume 1) with a cover date of February, 2011.
Synopsis for "The Black Mirror, Part 2 of 3"
Oracle has connected CEO William Rhodes to the Mirror House, but before Batman can bring him in, Rhodes crashes his car and dies. Oracle manipulates his finances to make it look like he’s still making purchases so that Batman can use a “smart mask,” a Batman Incorporated tool that makes the wearer look like whomever they want, to assume his identity at a Mirror House auction.
Batman theorizes that the Redfords, who made their money in imports, moved goods for the Dealer, and when they backed out, the Dealer placed Gale Redford under mind control while Dana stumbled across the Mutagen being stored at his house for later auction. Oracle tracks the Mirror House’s finances, discovering their clients include most wealthy families in Gotham. Oracle digs into Rhodes’s encrypted files to find an invitation to the next auction.
Batman meets Harvey Bullock because Commissioner Gordon has family business, and they exchange notes: Bullock discovered from retired friends that the Mirror House has been operating for decades, and Batman knows they have bribed police officers all over the country for stolen goods.
Batman enters the auction as Rhodes, and he is cut off from outside communication as he enters the site. He is given a gas mask by the doorman. The Dealer fills the room with a poisonous gas to preserve “discretion and exclusivity,” and he opens the auction with the crowbar the Joker used to beat one of the Robins to death. He then announces there is a bigger item on auction and reveals William Rhodes is really Batman, who is beginning to feel the effects of the poisonous gas since his mask was sabotaged. The Dealer tells the crowd to tear Batman apart.
