Dexter Dent is the son of Harvey and Gilda Dent, who became the ward and sidekick of Batman known as Robin.
History
Early Life
Dexter and his twin sister Debbie Dent were kidnapped by The Joker. Although they were saved by Batman, Debbie later seemingly committed suicide due to the trauma she suffered, but in fact Debbie had been murdered by their mentally unstable mother and their father used his position as a judge to hush it up. Rather than stand trial, Gilda was committed to Arkham Asylum, with the cover story being that she had had a mental breakdown after finding Debbie's body.[1]
After what had happened to the twins, Harvey was afraid to ever let Dexter out of his sight and brought him with him everywhere, including when he accompanied the GCPD to arrest Thomas Wayne for murdering Joe Chill, the man who killed his son. Scavenger, an assassin sent after Batman by Aquaman, shot Harvey with a harpoon when he got close, killing him and setting the car they were both in on fire. Dexter was saved by Batman moments before the car exploded.[2]
Although Dr. Wayne claimed that their timeline didn't matter and he was determined to escape and return to Earth 0, he still took Dexter in because he reminded him of Bruce, justifying it to himself that Dexter had been a witness and could be useful. The next morning after breakfast, Dexter saw Thomas enter a hidden staircase in his house and realized that he was Batman.
Not knowing the truth about his mother, Dexter planned to break into Arkham and "rescue" her, as he believed Arkham made people worse. Wayne told his assistant Oswald Cobblepot to watch him and so Dexter asked Oswald to teach him all the skills he believed he would need on his mission.[3] When he believed he was ready, he snuck down into the Batcave, stole a Utility Belt and fashioned a makeshift costume out of his school gym clothes and Batman's spare gloves and boots. Dexter managed to sneak into Arkham and make his way to Gilda's cell, evading or knocking out the guards. He released her from her cell, but Gilda had been driven completely insane by the Joker, who was hiding in the walls of Arkham and had been whispering to her at night.[4]
Batman, realizing the Joker was still alive and in Arkham, rushed to the asylum and broke in. Batman and the Joker fought while Gilda held Dexter, alternately comforting and threatening him, and saying that they would be "together forever".[5]
Becoming Robin
The four of them went down to a secret lab under the asylum, where the Joker had built a Time Sphere which would allow her and Batman to travel back in time and prevent their son's death. Gilda's darker half had fully taken over, holding a gun on Dexter and screaming that she wanted their timeline to be undone and that Harvey should have been the monster rather than her. Dexter asked Batman what would happen to him if they changed the timeline and Thomas told him that he would have never existed. Batman chose to try and save Dexter, accepting that his timeline was as valid as the original. Gilda set off a bomb to stop him and then tried to kill Dexter, screaming that he shouldn't exist, but the Joker disarmed and killed her, realizing that his life was as valid as her son's. The three of them escaped as the Asylum collapsed.
Dexter became Thomas' sidekick, and the two of them joined the fight against the Kryptonian invasion of Earth.[1]
