History

In the mid-20th Century, in the Middle East, several historically hereditary monarchies managed to survive both world wars, remaining independent and retaining their original form of government. Among these were Badarstan, Dherain, Kimrouk, Ughastan, and Zarikan.

On Earth-2, around the beginning of the 21st Century, Dherain was a small but modern monarchy that unwisely allied itself with the Apokoliptian conqueror Steppenwolf, to protect itself from its neighbors. King Marov even more unwisely tried to double-cross his Apokoliptian ally, who killed him, and took over his country.[1]

Two weeks later, the World Army invaded Dherain, and after a short but savage battle, was completely defeated by Steppenwolf and his forces. Hundreds of thousands of casualties were inflicted on the invaders, before a renegade lieutenant of Steppenwolf publicly murdered him, and took over his entire operation. By this time the entire nation of Dherain was either in ruins or on fire.[2]

Points of Interest

  • St. Draemyre, the capital city, is ultra-futuristic looking, and apparently it was like that before Steppenwolf's arrival there.

Residents

  • King Marov

Notes

  • Art in the last panel of the last page in Earth 2 #16 shows Dherain as being either in or adjacent to northeastern Italy.
    • In the Real World, this region is where Italy and Austria and Slovenia meet.
    • In the art, it looks like a wildfire big enough to be visible from space. If this is Dherain's last appearance, that would be why.
