Diablo was a black, adult male stallion that lived during the 1930s and 1940s.

He was the trusted steed of the Whip (Rodney Gaynor) and shared in many of his adventures. Diablo's strength, speed and fierce countenance proved just as intimidating to adversaries as that of his master. Prior to Rodney's heroics, Diablo was a polo horse.

  • Although this character was originally introduced during DC's Earth-Two era of publication, their existence following the events of the 1985–86 limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths remains intact. However, some elements of the character's Pre-Crisis history may have been altered or removed for Post-Crisis New Earth continuity, and no longer apply.
  • In Pre-Crisis Earth-Two continuity, Diablo's name was King.[1] In the Whip's Post-Crisis origin retelling in 1987's Secret Origins (Volume 2) #13, writers Roy and Dann Thomas renamed him Diablo,

Perhaps coincidentally, Diablo is also the name of the horse on which another Whip rode. Quality Comics' Johnny Lash, debuted in 1951's Crack Western #70 riding his own Diablo.
