Quote1 You think you can hold me? I am Diana. Daughter of Amazonia. You cannot hold me. I do not want violence, but I can crush your face if this attack continues. Quote2
Princess Diana src

Diana is the Queen of the Amazons and lover of Zala Jor-El.

Romance with Zala

Diana met Zala Jor-El when she came to be fostered on Amazonia in order to improve relations between the Amazons and the House of El. The two princesses fell in love and formed a relationship. Years later Zala left Amazonia when her father King Jor-El was assassinated by the Green Man.[1] A few days later the Amazon's ally King Jefferson of the Kingdom of the storms came to Amazonia. He and his advisor Constantine met with Hippolyta, Diana and the Amazon spymaster Lois, where Jefferson admitted he had hired the Green Man to kill Jor-El, as Diana's mother Queen Hippolyta suspected. King Jefferson insisted that the House of El were a danger to the world and evil, and claimed that Zala had murdered his son Prince Jacob in retaliation for Jor-El's death.

Diana insisted that Zala could not have done such a thing, and when Hippolyta agreed to stand by her alliance with the Kingdom of Storms and go to war against the Els if need be, Diana stormed off in a rage.[2] She rode her pegasus to the Castle of El and was waylaid at Hobb Forest by the Lady of the Forest. The sound of their fight attracted Zala, who had returned home, and her brother Prince Kal-El. Diana privately spoke to Zala and told her Jefferson claimed he had murdered his son and the Amazons were prepared to go to war against the Els. Zala denied murdering Jacob and told Diana that if a war came, they would both need to make sure they were on the same side, and that their families could not keep them apart.[3]

Timothy Drake, Bat-Prince's spy in the Jefferson's court, returned to the Castle of El and told the court, including Diana, that King Jefferson had been murdered at sea and the Kingdom of Storms was marching to war. He also said that everyone he spoke to claimed Zala had killed him, although she insisted she had not.[4]

Hippolyta's Death

The Kingdom of Storms led by Jefferson's daughter Queen Anissa, and the Amazons led by Hippolyta, invaded the Lands of El in retaliation for Jefferson and Jacob's deaths. When the two armies reached the castle, Diana and Zala flew down and asked them to turn and leave in a last-ditch effort to avoid war. Hippolyta ordered Diana to stand aside but she refused, and told her mother she would need to go through her if she wanted to take the castle.

Suddenly, Zala began to mysteriously cough up water and she fell to the ground drowning. Diana begged Hippolyta to stop whoever was causing it, but before she could do anything Zala's mother Queen Lara flew down out of the sky into the middle of their confrontation. The impact knocked everyone aside and the water in Zala's lungs disappeared. While Diana was comforting Zala Hippolyta asked Lara to peacefully surrender and avoid bloodshed, but to Diana's horror Lara murdered Hippolyta in front of her with her heat vision.[5]

Becoming Queen

After a moment's shock, Diana and the other Amazons tried to attack Lara, but she simply flew up into the air out of their reach. A moment later, Kal-El crashed down to Earth in front of them. Hippolyta's general Philippus asked Diana what they should do, telling her that she was now queen. Kal-El asked Diana to listen, but Diana, stricken with grief, punched him across the field and ordered the Amazons to attack. The El's army charged out on horseback but Queen Anissa broke their charge by creating an earthquake in their path. he Kingdom of Storms and Amazons charged the disorganised El's, but their charge was also broken by the arrival of the Bat-Prince riding on a dragon. With all sense of discipline destroyed, the battle descended into a chaotic melee.

Suddenly Lara was tackled down to Earth by her exact doppleganger. The battle paused as the three armies stopped fighting and for a moment stared in silent shock at the two Lara's. The "Lara" who had killed Hippolyta was shot in the chest with a flaming crossbow bolt and burst into flames. She transformed into a white-skinned monster and flew away. Kal-El and Zala attempted to chase it down, but it vanished into thin air.[6]

The Martian War

The leaders of the armies gathered at the edge of the battlefield, where the El's Master-at-arms Alfred revealed that he was also an alien. Diana blamed him for the pointless carnage and her mother's death and moved to attack him, but Bat-Prince defended him. Kal-El, who had been imprisoned on Amazonia, gave her the magic rope which the Amazons used to compel prisoners to tell the truth. Diana bound Alfred with the rope and he assured them that he meant none of them any harm. Lara invited Diana and Queen Anissa to a conference to discuss the newly discovered threat, allowing them to bring their soldiers into the city to receive succour. Before the conference, Diana laid Hippolyta's body out in a chamber in the Castle of El and mourned her. Zala came to collect her for the meeting, and when Zala addressed her as "your majesty", Diana begged her not to. Diana weptin Zala's arms until she could collect herself.

The three queens, joined by the Lady of the Forest; questioned Alfred, who was still bound in the rope. He revealed that his true name was J'onn J'onzz from the planet Mars, and the monster they had seen was a White Martian, the enemy of his people, the Greens. He told them that the White Martians wanted to take Earth after a war between their peoples had devastated Mars, and the queens realised that everything had been a plot by the Whites to get the potential threats of the Amazons, Kryptonians and Pierces to destroy each other and leave the way open to conquer Earth. Diana swore vengeance on the White Martians and their leader Protex, declaring that she would find and kill him wherever he hid.[7]

The queens did not initially trust J'onn, and kept him imprisoned and bound in the rope. After he was attacked and almost killed in his cell by one of the Whites, they decided to release him and take his advice, setting up multiple fire-based defences to hold the invaders at bay. Diana, Zala and a team of labourers dug a moat around the Castle of El and filled it with burning pitch.[8]

Scorched Earth

The next day Lois, Constantine and the El's advisor Harley came up with a plan to defeat the White Martians once and for all by luring them to the dormant volcano Mount Kristoff and triggering an eruption; where Bruce, Kal-El, Diana and Zala would battle them when they had been severely weakened by the flaming lava. That night, the Martians somehow brought down the bonfires surrounding the castle, but the Amazon defenders were ready for them and kept them pinned down. A messenger rode to the castle to tell them the Martians were attacking and so Diana and the others headed out to face them.

The four dove into the middle of the battle and challenged Protex to face them. They flew to Mount Kristoff, with Zala carrying Diana. The full force of Martians chased after them, and when they had surrounded the mountain King Jefferson's daughters Queen Anissa and Princess Jennifer used their powers to trigger the volcano to erupt. The Martians were doused in lava and severely injured or killed, but Zala and the others were unharmed, protected by their powers. They doused themselves in pitch and set it alight, making them even more deadly to the Martians. They battled and easily defeated the Martians.

Diana confronted the Martian who killed her mother and demanded to know his name. He tried to attack her but she sliced off his arm and demanded his name again. He said he was called Gra'z and she told him his name would live on as a cautionary tale for anyone who would dare to harm an Amazon queen. She brutally killed Gra'z but Zala stopped her from murdering the other helpless survivors. Lara banished the defeated Martians to a Realm of Phantoms. A week later, the three kingdoms united into a League.[9]
