Diana of Themyscira is Wonder Woman, the last of the Amazons, Princess of Hell and Witch of the Wild Isle. She protects the world from ancient monsters known as the Harbingers.

Origins

Darkseid created the Absolute Universe to be a world where heroes were the underdogs, and lacked the advantages of their Earth 0 counterparts.[2] As such, Diana did not grow up on a Paradise Island with a sisterhood of Amazons, but was instead raised alone on the barren "Wild Isle of Hell" by the sorceress Circe.

When Diana was a baby, the Amazons committed some unknown offence against the Gods. To punish them, Zeus took Diana from them, never to be reunited with her sisters, and imprisoned the Amazons for eternity. Zeus even went so far as to outlaw the very word "Amazon", so that no mortal or God could speak it. He had Apollo deliver Diana to the Isle of Hell, where Circe had been imprisoned for her own crimes against the gods many years ago. Apollo told Circe that she was now Diana's warden but did not give her any instructions to keep Diana alive. Circe initially planned to allow Diana to die of exposure and left her on a rock. A snake quickly slithered towards Diana and attempted to eat her, but to Circe's surprise Diana simply grasped it and casually threw it a great distance. Impressed, Circe took Diana into her shelter and began caring for her.

Over the years as she grew beasts, demons and lost souls came to kill Diana, but she easily overpowered or befriended them. Circe also quickly came to love Diana as her daughter, and added more comforts to the cave where they lived to make it into a home fit for a child. As she grew older, Diana began to feel like there was a word she had never said, but was important and powerful.[3]

When Diana was a young woman, she found USAF office Steve Trevor washed up on the shore of the Wild Isle. The hydra which lived in the sea just off the coast dragged him underwater but Diana rescued him and took him back to the cave. When he woke up Diana and Circe told Steve where he was, although they were unsure if he was dead or not. Steve was frozen with existential terror but soon pulled himself together. He told Diana that he didn't believe he belonged in Hell, and she replied that not everybody in Hell did, they simply ended up there. Steve somehow later returned to Earth.[1]

Man's World

Eventually Diana was finally able to say the forbidden word: Amazon. Circe told her who she was, and how the Amazons had been the protectors of the world above. She outfitted Diana with the most powerful weapons she could create and sent her into the world above to face ancient monsters who want to feast on the world.[3]

Diana drove back the first wave of monsters known as Harbingers, but their leader Harbinger Prime warned her that worse was coming. She reunited with Steve, who was once again working for the military, and he took her to meet his commanding officer, Commander Cole. Diana was unimpressed by Cole's bluster and simply told him to evacuate a mile zone around the shore as worse things than the Harbingers would come out of the sea within the hour. To Diana's horror, what emerged was the Tetracide, the greatest of all monsters. She told Cole to evacuate the city, saying that she would buy time for them to escape.[1]
