Diana of Themyscira is the Wonder Woman of Earth 19.
History
Origins
In the ancient depths of prehistory, two rival civilisations ruled: the Kryptonian Empire and the Amazons of Themyscira. The Amazons rejected the advanced science of the Kryptonians and instead embraced the magic of the Old Gods. Eventually the Kryptonians' advanced technology brought about the Doom of Krypton when they opened a portal to "the Netherworld", unleashing horrors of the Otherworld onto the surface and shifting the Earth's magnetic poles. The Amazons took refuge from the Doom in the subterranean world of Skartaris, where they established the new fortified City of Themyscira against the monsters of the deeps.
Eventually the Amazons' seers predicted that the Doom would return. Most were content to leave the surface world to be destroyed but Diana insisted that they must try to save the innocents in the world above. She and twelve companions left to find the way back to the surface, and one by one were killed until only Diana remained. She finally found the path back to the surface and emerged in the ruins of the Kryptonian city in Antarctica.[2][3]
The Kryptonian Age
Diana observed a group of explorers, lead by Professor Adam Strange enter and investigate the ruins of the Kryptonian city. A giant centipede, one of the monsters from Skartaris, had followed Diana to the surface and attacked the men. She swooped in to save them.[4] Rather than kill the creature, she used the Cord of Hestia to communicate with it and convince it to return to the depths below. She told the explorers that the Doom of Krypton had returned, and vowed to save their world from it or die in the attempt. None of them could understand her, and so Diana used the cord to share her thoughts with Professor Strange and show him her story.[2]
Professor Strange was convinced of her story and the danger of the Doom, and two of them made the journey back to Antarctica's sole port so she could warn the leaders of the outside world. Along the way Diana quickly taught herself English and read and memorised every book Strange's expedition had brought with them.[5]
They took passage on a ship called the Eclipse. During the journey, a crewman came running up on deck screaming that he had encountered a monster in the hold. Diana went down to investigate and met The Stranger, who she quickly discovered was the last surviving Martian, a people who had been exterminated by the Kryptonians. He suggested they could unite against their common foe, the Kryptonians, and when he sensed the Doom he teleported them both to Smallville, Kansas. They arrived outside the sheriff's station, which was on fire, and the Kryptonian emerged from the burning building, unhurt by the flames.[6]
A League for Justice
Manhunter declared to the Kryptonian that he would have vengeance for Mars, but Wonder Woman told him to hold because the Sleeper did not carry himself like a conqueror. The Kryptonian said that he had no time for introductions as people were in need of help. He went to battle a band of bank robbers and Manhunter looked inside his mind. He saw that the Kryptonian knew nothing of his people's ancient empire, the genocide of Mars, the wars with Themyscira or the Doom. Wonder Woman said that was a good thing and they should speak to the Kryptonian to learn what his purpose was in the world of men, pointing out that he was living in a small village rather than attempting to rebuild the Empire.
A man named Alan Scott confronted Manhunter, calling him a murderer. Manhunter saw that Alan was wearing the Ring of Jong Li, which had showed him how Jong Li had died at Manhunter's hands. Manhunter said that the ring was too great a threat to be allowed to endure but Jong Li refused to give it up, and so the two had fought and Manhunter had killed him. He ordered Alan to yield but he refused and the two of them charged into battle. They fought until Wonder Woman bound them together with her Cord of Hestia, yelling at them to stop. She told them that people with their power should be above petty squabbling. They each agreed to stand down and acknowledged the other was not the great danger they initially saw him as.
Manhunter sensed that the source of the doom was out in the desert, carried away by a masked adventurer known as Batman. They flew to the location, hidden from Batman's perceptions by Manhunter's mental powers, and found that the Kryptonian was already there. Although Batman was initially prepared to fight the Kryptonian, when the three of them revealed themselves he realised he was outnumbered and said they should talk.[3]
Diana and the others, along with Batman and the masked Kryptonian, who went by "The Sentinel"; all went to Batman's airship to discuss what had happened. Diana and Manhunter revealed who they were, much to Alan Scott's disbelief. Batman said that all the strange events around them connected to the contents of the capsule: a glowing green crystal. Diana said that she would not question the wisdom of the fates that had brought them together; and then that the Sentinel must be involved as he was a Kryptonian. However, the Sentinel did not even know what a Kryptonian was and asked if it was supposed to be some kind of insult. Manhunter bitterly replied that it was and revealed that the Kryptonians were not, as Diana had believed, an ancient race of humans. In fact they had come from a distant world known as Krypton. Long before recorded history the Kryptonians' lust for power had lead them to conduct experiments on the energies of the Netherworld, which had destroyed Krypton. They had then travelled to Mars where they had slaughtered the Manhunter's people and subsequently destroyed that planet too, before once again fleeing to Earth. The Sentinel was shaken by these revelations and Manhunter and Wonder Woman began arguing over a blank spot he could see inside her mind.
Alan interrupted and tried to ask exactly where the Sentinel had come from if this had all happened thousands of years ago, but suddenly the Sentinel and Manhunter heard screams coming from Smallville. Down below, a giant mechanical man made of locomotive parts was attacking the town. A reporter named Lois Lane confronted the machine and recognised its pilot as Lex Luthor, a notorious industrialist. The group confronted Luthor and Manhunter attempted to enter his mind, but was then suddenly overcome by pain. Luthor attempted to immolate Manhunter with a flamethrower, but Alan shielded him with the ring. Wonder Woman tied the machine up with the Cord of Hestia and the Sentinel was able to knock it down. Batman broke into the cockpit to apprehend Luthor. However, the machine was still operation and Luthor used it to overpower Batman. Luthor saw the airship glowing green and realised the crystal was onboard. He shot it down and took the crystal from the wreckage, then loaded it into the machine. However, the machine then appeared to explode with power and disappear. Alan quipped that it had been a big night for a small town, but lamented that it was a pity the sheriff didn't make it. Batman started to say something about the sheriff, but then suddenly stopped mid-sentence.[7]
The Sentinel revealed that he was Sheriff Kent, and they all agreed to work together to prevent the Kryptonian artefacts he had been meddling with from causing further damage. They all travelled to Luthor's base known as "Luthorville", where J'onn sensed a Kryptonian presence within a safe. Sentinel ripped it open and inside they found Jay Garrick suspended inside a case, frozen in time. Victor Stone stepped out of the shadows wrapped in a trenchcoat, saying that he was trying to release Garrick and not to disturb his work. He then passed out from exhaustion and the coat fell away, revealing that he was half-machine. J'onn entered Garrick's mind to help guide Garrick back.
While the others were waiting, a mysterious woman walked in. Batman told them that the stranger, Talia al Ghul, was a ruthless assassin and was about to attack her, but she said she did not want to fight them. Talia informed them that Luthor was alive and now serving an ancient Kryptonian murderer called Zod, and asked for their help stealing back the crystal from him. Stone suddenly snapped awake and Garrick emerged from his case, asking what he had missed.
Diana and Manhunter travelled to Buenos Aires, where they met up with Professor Strange and the American embassy and sent telegrams to Washington, D.C. warning them of the crisis. They deduced that Zod would travel to the site of Old Themyscira in Anatolia to open the Gates of Eternity, through which he could access the Netherworld. However, when he and Luthor, who he had pressed into service as his minion, got there they discovered that Diana's mother had destroyed the Gates long ago. Diana and her allies, now calling themselves the League for Justice, were waiting for him.[8]
Sentinel tried to talk to Zod and find a peaceful solution, but Zod was not interested and blasted him away. J'onn J'onzz and Alan Scott then charged at him, but Zod also dispatched them fairly easily. Diana then lassoed him in the air with the Cord of Hestia and climbed up it to fight him. He broke her sword and then flew them at high speed down into the ground, knocking her out.
Batman and Talia were able to remove the crystal from Zod's armour, and Sentinel recovered enough to punch him away. However, when he tried to retrieve the crystal, he suddenly collapsed. Zod revealed that the crystal was toxic to their kind and only his armour protected him from it. He then declared that by right of conquest he had taken Earth from Sentinel and would kill him. However, just when it seemed all hope was lost Garrick and Stone teleported in with John Constantine and Batman's fiancé Huntress. Garrick and Stone were able to break Zod's armour and he was quickly brought down by the crystal. Alan contained the crystal in a force bubble and Wonder Woman bound him in the Cord of Hestia. However, while no-one was paying attention Luthor stole a Kryptonian medallion from the remnants of Zod's armour and used it to teleport away.[9]
Manhunter put Zod in a dream state to subdue him, but informed the others that it would not last forever and said they should kill him, however Wonder Woman and Sentinel refused. They instead agreed that J'onn, Wonder Woman, Sentinel, Alan Scott and Talia al Ghul would take Zod into the subterranean world of Skartaris to be imprisoned; while Batman, Huntress, Stone, Garrick and Constantine would return to Gotham City to try and deduce where Luthor had gone.
They teleported into the cavern world of Skartaris and Wonder Woman lead them back to Themyscira. Her mother was shocked to see her return alive and with Zod, and yelled at her that she was no warrior or daughter of hers to leave such an enemy alive. The queen insisted on speaking to Diana alone before they did anything else. She revealed that there had been a prophecy that Diana would defy her and go to the world above in an attempt to avert the second doom, never to return; but the prophecy was now broken. The queen also told Diana that she had made her rather than birthed her, and had raised her entire life to fulfil the prophecy. Diana was heartbroken to learn that the queen did not see her as a daughter, only a weapon created for a single purpose. She said that she had long given up earning her "mother's" love, but asked for at least her respect and the queen replied that she had it. The queen agreed to imprison Zod, binding him in sorcery and locking him in the deepest pit of the city's prison.
Manhunter warned them that, although Zod was now contained, the risk still remained that Luthor would open a door to the Phantom Zone. He sensed Luthor in the territory of Alaska and they teleported to Wayne Manor to join up with the others. Reunited, they teleported to Luthor's location, which was one of the ancient pyramid ships the Kryptonians had used to travel to Earth in the distant past. They descended inside and found that Luthor had opened a portal to the Phantom Zone.[1]
They followed Luthor through the portal, but Wonder Woman and Manhunter both warned them that the Zone was a prison for Darkseid, a being of unspeakable power and indescribable evil. Sentinel suggested that he should take the Kryptonite core that powered his ship back into space so that the Kryptonian medallion Luthor had used to open the Zone would become inert again. However, Alan pointed out that it had also empowered his ring, given Garrick his speed and fuelled the machines which were keeping Stone alive; and that the world was better with them in it. Talia accused them of beginning to fall to lust for power and said that the League of Shadows had worked for centuries to keep their power out of the hands of mortal men for just this reason. Alan started to argue with her and she challenged him to relinquish his power to prove her wrong. Manhunter interrupted them and said that such conversations could come later: for now they needed to stand united and would need all their power to survive the Phantom Zone.
They all ran through the portal and emerged in what appeared to be a grey desert full of green mist. Wonder Woman warned them to stay together, but to each of their perspectives the others seemed to disappear. In fact they were all still in the same place but could not see or hear each other. Instead they were tormented by the phantoms who took the forms of their fears, as they needed the attentions of the living to be given form and shape. In Diana's case, the phantoms took the form of her dead companions. Thanks to the Cord of Hestia she was able to see them for the illusions they were and resist the vision. She and Batman were able to wake the others.
They found Luthor kneeling in their midst, babbling and laughing insanely, his mind broken by seeing the true enormity of Darkseid. Sentinel took the medallion from Luthor and Manhunter offered to teach him how to use it as it was his "birthright". Sentinel agreed and handed the medallion to Manhunter just as Batman warned him not to. As soon as Manhunter had the third medallion, he and Constantine activated their own medallion and disappeared, teleporting back to the gate. Garrick chased after them, but arrived too late as Manhunter and Constantine crossed through and sealed the gate behind them.
Wonder Woman said they needed to find another way out before Darkseid found them, but to their horror the insane Luthor revealed that the "desert" they were in was in fact the palm of the gigantic Darkseid's hand. Batman yelled at Luthor to find them a way out and Luthor giggled that they would need to "travel light". Batman realised that they needed to change from matter to energy, and then the K-core would pull them out, as it drew energy from the Phantom Zone. Garrick was able to convert mass into energy, but did not have enough power to do it for the entire group. By channelling the power of the Ring of Jong-Li through Stone's mechanical components and into Garrick, he was able to transform them and they appeared in a warehouse in Gotham where Constantine had taken the K-core.
Constantine claimed he knew they would be able to make it out and Wonder Woman threw the Cord over him to force him to tell the truth. He explained that he knew Manhunter wanted to destroy the K-core, when Constantine had planned to take it for the British government. To disguise his true intentions he had covered that thought with ones to betray and trap them in the Phantom Zone in order to keep their Kryptonian-derived abilities contained and Manhunter had agreed. He also claimed he could not have shared his plans with them as they did not know the mental techniques he had used to deceive the Manhunter. Constantine said that he believed they had the potential to be a force for good in the world and they united as the League for Justice.[10]
