Dionysus is the Greek God of Wine and Theatre. He was mostly ambivalent towards the Amazons but aided Hera in protecting them.
History
Dionysus was largely ambivalent towards the Amazons, unlike most the other male gods who sought to exterminate them. During the Gods' attempted genocide of the Amazons, Hera visited Dionysus and persuaded him to help protect the women as their death would mean loosing the talented actors and playwrights among them, who entertained the Theatre god. At Hera's request, Dionysus tricked Apollo into thinking that the war was actually honouring the Amazons by giving them a glorious death in battle. Apollo took the bait and later requested to Zeus that the Amazons be granted immortality instead of death so that they could spend an eternity of imprisonment, effectively sparring the Amazons from death.[1]
