Doc Savage (Volume 2) #3 is an issue of the series Doc Savage (Volume 2) with a cover date of December, 1988.
Synopsis for "Battleground"
Chip Savage falls from a helicopter and begins to slowly drift down to the ground. Following his lead, Doc Savage and Shoshanna Gold jump out of the helicopter and find themselves slowly drifting down to the mountain as well. The helicopter crashes, leading the trio to believe that whatever anti-gravity field saved them from a certain death must no longer be active. While they are talking, a robot approaches. Through trial and error the adventurers discover the robot is programmed to go after Chip. As Chip clings to the rock face and the robot reaches for him, Doc Savage knocks the robot off the side of the mountain.
In Moscow, a Russian colonel breaks into a General's office and forcefully interrogates him. The colonel asks the general how and why he sabotaged a submarine that went missing the previous year. The general denies involvement at first then confesses he did it for the goddess Eris, who resides on the moon. Then the general breaks free of the colonel's grasp and breaks his own neck.
Somewhere in America, in a bar, Monk Mayfair is drunk and tells his fellow patrons he no longer has faith in Doc Savage. He says Doc used to perform surgeries on criminals to make them criminals no longer, only he made them something worse. Then Monk passes out.
In the Himalayas, Shoshanna and the Savages are making a rudimentary shelter out of the helicopter wreckage when Doc tells Chip there is a transmitter in Chip's clothes that will bring help eventually. Chip gets indignant that Doc would spy on him and Shoshanna admits that she planted the transmitter because she was worried about Chip. Chip thinks Shoshanna might be saying she loves him, but he's not certain.
Back in America, the other bar patrons have found a phone number in Monk's pockets and called Ham Brooks, who had come to the bar to pick up Monk. The two leave the bar and Monk shares with Hal his disillusionment.
In the Arctic, Shoshanna, the savages and Beauregard Faulkner are en route to the Fortress of Solitude with the wreckage from the helicopter. When they arrive, Bo asks Shoshanna out on a date and she refuses. Savage meets with some of his compatriots to determine the origins of a ship they discovered that Shoshanna says came from the moon.
On the moon, two aliens discuss the abduction of Chip Savage. They talk about how their robot has not yet returned.
Back on Earth, Shoshanna awakens from a vision of the above conversation between the two aliens on the moon. Johnny, one of the scientists Doc Savage met with about the spacecraft tells Savage that his analysis of the craft picked up signs of dust that is definitely from the moon. He also tells Savage the plastic the craft is made from is at least thirty centuries old. At this moment, three Soviet helicopters land on the deck of the Fortress. The Soviet colonel from earlier and two men, all three armed, disembark from one of the helicopters and Bo shoots one of the men. The colonel shoots Bo in return. Savage says this means war.
