Doctor Bedlam is a being of pure psionic energy. With no true body to speak of any longer, he downloads his consciousness into android bodies. These bodies are often referred to as Animates. When one body is destroyed, he merely transmits his essence into a new one. The process can often be trying however, and Bedlam frequently suffers severe psychological feedback when he switches from one body to the next. Bedlam can also divide his consiousness among his animates, and command them as his own private army.
