Doctor Fang was a former boxer and actor, who turned to crime and emerged in Gotham City's underworld as a numbers racketeer and criminal mastermind.

His ventures commonly involved sending his hired thugs to local businesses to extort proprietors for protection money. These actions soon earned him the attention of Batman's teen sidekick, Robin. Fang quickly grew enchanted with petty crimes however, and embarked to push himself into the big leagues. Believing Gotham City police detective Harvey Bullock to be a corrupt cop on the take, Doctor Fang placed him on retainer.[1] He told Bullock of his plan to make a grab for the Wayne Foundation's holdings. Bullock immediately alerted Bruce Wayne, who in turn, investigated the matter as Batman. Along with Robin, the two managed to foil Fang's scheme, but the criminal escaped.[2]

On his next scheme, Doctor Fang arranged a boxing match by blackmailing the champion, but the fight was interrupted by a murder attempt and the money Fang had invested was lost. For this reason, Fang had the champion killed,[3] but he was soon captured by Batman and the champion's adversary, who learned about Fang's extortion of the champ and defeated the thug, giving him to Batman[4]

While in prison, Fang's henchmen arranged a deal with Mayor Hamilton Hill in order to have their boss released. Fang's thugs were supposed to murder Harvey Bullock, but when they failed, Hill had Fang released from prison to kill Bullock himself. However, Fang wasn't interested in Bullock and instead tracked down Batman to the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, where the Dark Knight was fighting the Night-Slayer. During the melee, the Night-Slayer withdrew his revolver and fired a fatal shot aimed at Batman, but killed Doctor Fang instead.[5] His body was soon removed and taken to the nearest park by Nocturna and Robin.[6]
