- How can you call a few pitiful criminals and ineffectual medical students "people"? How can the worth of their lives be compared to the ceaseless advance of medical science?
- — Doctor Seltsam src
Doctor Seltsam is a scientist in charge of the local university at Ingolstadt, Germany in the early 19th Century.
History
His greatest innovation was a fluid used to preserve body parts for extraordinarily long times. Unfortunately the process for creating this fluid involved harvesting material from living bodies, so he turned to murder. In addition to killing his own medical students, he worked with local highwaymen giving them information on robbery targets in exchange for corpses. He would also provide them with masks made from human flesh. His methods were opposed by his colleague Thomas Wayne, so he had an accomplice Van Klooster murder Wayne and Wayne's wife. This event orphaned their young child Bruce Wayne, who grew up to work alongside Seltsam as a scientist at the university. Bruce became obsessed with studying resurrection and combining body parts from different animals, which Seltsam condemned as unnatural. Despite Seltsam's attempts to shut down his expensive research, Bruce Wayne eventually resurrected his father whose brain had been preserved by Seltsam. Thomas Wayne, now a monster called the Bat-Man by locals due to his animal parts, eventually hunted down Van Klooster and attacked him. Realizing Bruce was getting too close to the truth, Seltsam had Van Klooster kidnap Bruce's manservant Alfredo and pet Bat-Hound. He also betrayed Van Klooster, intending to perform deadly experiments on all of them. Bruce Wayne arrived in time to save Alfredo, but Seltsam set his laboratory to destruct while he escaped. They were interrupted by the Bat-Man who attacked Seltsam, and the building collapsed in flames with Thomas and Seltsam still inside.[1]

Notes
- Doctor Seltsam, unlike most of the other primary characters in Castle of the Bat, seems to have no direct counterpart in mainstream continuity. He appears to be an entirely original character.
