Hmmm ... Says here the Prince of Donte Marlo is an absolute autocrat! It doesn't seem possible, but there are still a few of them around in the world!

The former principality of Donte Marlo became a democratic republic in 1946.

History

Donte Marlo was a tiny principality on the Mediterranean Coast of Europe. Donte Marlo's main industry was gambling. Many of the locals, and almost all of the tourists, were addicted to gambling. Poverty, brawling, and suicide were commonplace, outside of the swanky casinos.

Ruling as an absolute autocrat, the Prince of Donte Marlo was not content to collect all of the nation's taxes and skim the winnings from his casinos, no, he also had to cheat. The roulette wheel in his Royal Casino was mechanically rigged, and by means of this device, in 1946, the Prince was able to win a traveling American circus from its owner. This provoked a stealthy investigation by the circus ex-owner's employees, who discovered the rigging under the roulette wheel. Their leader, Clarence "Carnie" Calahan figured out a way to use the same device for some counter-cheating, and then fast-talked his way back into the Casino, won back the circus, and the national treasury, and the Deed to Donte Marlo itself. These last two winnings were informally distributed to the population of Donte Marlo, who were encouraged to form a more democratic republic.

A few days later they had done so, and the former Prince was now a street sweeper.
